Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
at its meeting of October 10, 1978 gives rise to the following motion:
MOTION: ?
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
Board of Governors, as set forth In S.78-115, the
change to permit a student who wishes to obtain a
Bachelor of Arts Degree through the Faculty of Arts
with a Minor in Mathematics to count Mathematics
courses as Arts courses."
The proposed change would bring consieny for students who
wish to undertake a Minor, a Major or Honors—tn Mathematics whilst
pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree through the Faculty 'of Arts to count
Mathematics courses as Arts courses. At present those undertaking .-
Minor in Mathematics can count Mathematics courses only as Science courses.

Mathematics Minors
The Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee at its meeting of
June 15, 1978 approved the attached change in requirements
for students who wish minor degrees in conjunction with majors
in the Faculty of Arts requested by the Mathematics Department.
The present Calendar allows only Honors and Majors students
to count Mathematics courses as Arts, the proposed change
will allow Minor students to do the same.

The Mathematics Department wishes to suggest to the Faculty of
Arts that the first sentence of the Note on page
88
of the
1977-
78
edition of the SFU Calendar be changed to read:
"Students who wish to obtain a B.A. degree
with a minor, major or honors in Mathematics
may count Mathematics as an Arts subject."

purpose of the proposal is to allow B.A. students minoring

in
Mathematics to count their work in Mathematics as Arts rather than
Science courses, which then would permit them more opportunities to
complete such minors in conjunction with B.A. degrees. . At present
majors and honors students in Mathematics who wish to pursue a B.A.
degree can count Mathematics courses as courses within the Faculty
of Arts. However, B.A. students with majors and honors in Arts
may not count Mathematics courses taken towards a minor as Arts
courses.
This often bars such students from obtaining Mathematics
minors. As the regulation implies an inconsistency in approach to
Mathematics courses, and a hardship to students, the Department
wishes to include minor students with majors and honors students
among thosewho can count Mathematics courses as Arts courses.
I would be grateful if you would take this proposal before the
Faculty of Arts Undergraduate Curriculum Committee for its
consideration and,.I hope, approval..
