FPA. 176-3 - Photography as
Action taken by the Senate Committee on UndercjraduatC
Studies at its meeting on August 15, 1978 gives rise
to the following motion:
Motion
"That Senate approve, and recommend approval
to the Board of Governors, asset forth in
S78-86 the new course FPA. 176-3, Photography
as an Art Form."
Note: Subject to the approval by Senate and the
Board of this course, the Senate Committee
on undergraduate Studies has approved
waiver of the time lag requirement in order
that this course may be offered in the
Spring semester 79-1.
In discussion at the Senate Committee on
Undergraduate Studies the question was
raised as to whether the course was one
primarily on techniques but the Committee
was satisfied that the course properly
falls in the visual art area with different
orientation from that which pertained when
earlier versions were offered through
Communication Studies, with, different
program goals.

Photography As An Art Form
Rationale
This course is designed particularly for FPA. students interested
in pursuing Film and/or Visual Arts. It will provide basic approaches
in
.
aesthetic perception and composition that can be utilized in the
art forms of theatre and dance. as well. Since the existing photoqraphy,
course offered by the Department of Communications
(ii#l(i2J.s
14,7,-
2.5_5i)
Introduction to Visual Language)/i. J.,ee.
?
to avoid .dupiication,
it is agreed that Communications students will also .be eligible to take
the course by written permission of the department. This is necessary
because the demand for this course will far exceed the enrollment re-
strictions based on equipment and facilities.
?
. .
Basic techniques of 35mm photography will be explained, and assign-
ments will be designed to give the student varied experiences in taking,
printing, and presenting photographs. Previous experience with pho-
tography is not necessary...
The Department of Communications has 'agreed to maintain cc. 6117
(darkroom) and cc. 6121 (print and drymount room), and we will have
. access to these facilities and their present equipment for the course.
We hope to move the facilities to the Centre for the Arts as soon as
space becomes available. We hope to add more equipment as our budget
permits. Lynn Vardeman who has taught the course successfully in the
Department of Communications, has agreed to teach the course on a
sessional basis.
