Students proposing to enter the Honors Program in Philosophy must first
complete 60 hours of University coursework including 12 hours of Philosophy
and fulfil the lower division requirements listed in the section 'Requirements
for Minor, Major and Honors'.
?
A grade point average of 3.0 or higher for all
?
Philosophy courses is required for acceptance and continuation in the program,
but does not by itself guarantee either.
?
Students proposing to enter the
Honors Program must submit an application (a form is available, in the depart-
ment office) and consult the department's undergraduate advisor.
?
After one
?
semester of course-work in the honors program a candidate must, in consultation
with the undergraduate advisor, devise a program of studies.
?
Consideration of
the application and proposed program of studies will be based on the department's
assessment of the student's performance and potential as a scholar.
To be added to the Philosophy Department's calendar section: "Requirements for
Minor, Major and Honors"
" ?
The honors candidate must achieve a grade of B or higher, in the Honors Tutorials
in order to receive the honors degree.
RatLo,ta2e.
Most Honors students in philosophy plan to do graduate work in the field.
However, in recent years competition for places in good graduate programs has
made it all but impossible for any but the best students to go on in philosophy.
This has led us. to reassess the "open admissions" policy which presently exists
for our program.. In some cases It is decidedly not in the student's best
interest to undertake an Honors program, but we do not now have
,
any formal way
to prevent students from doing so.
?
In philosophy each honors student gets a
tutorial 'specially designed for his individual interest.
?
This method takes
up a considerable amount of faculty time (it is essentially a course given just
for this 'student), and there have been cases where the student's time could have
been better spent in the majors program. Our hope isto make the honors program
more selective and to encourage more students to make use of our majors program.
With this proposal we are following the practice of having an admissions procedure
to. the Honors Program similartQ'that wh.ich'41ready exists in the following Arts
departments: English, History, Political Science and Psychology.
