From..
VICE-PRESIDENT ACADEMIC
Su6ject.PROFESSOR.
EMERITUS..
?
Date.. APRIL 20, 1978
For some time there have been proposals that this
University adopt the long-established practice of many
universities in providing for the designation "professor
emeritus" (using the masculine, feminine, or plural forms
as appropriate) . Much information was collected from a
goodly number of institutions and other sources and it was
clear that there are many variations in the principles,
policies and procedures used. In brief, an institution
decides on what it considers appropriate. There have been
a number of intensive discussions, particularly with the
Deans, with agreement that the policy proposed should be
kept as uncomplicated as possible.
It is recommended that Senate approve, and recommend
approval to the Board, policy as follows -
"Professors Emeriti -
Any full professor who has served Simon Fraser University at
that rank for ten years or more and who retires (not leaves
the university - minimum age fifty-five) shall be automatically
made Professor Emeritus (or Professor Emerita) of this University,
a title held for life. Such title shall be independent of any
other employment the professor may seek or take thereafter.
Professors Emeripi/Il
d in the University Calendars
as such, shalL4rnve ho ii to supervise graduate students
under normal Senate Regulations, and shall be members of
Convocation.
Exceptions to this policy can be made only by the Board of Governors
on the advice of the President who will himself/herself seek proper
advice."
The interpretation and application of this policy will be
determined by the President.
