....................................
In response to the discussion at the meeting of the Executive
Committee of the Senate Graduate Studies Committee on 4 June 1979, I
propose the following clarifications of entries in the University Graduate
Calendar:
(i) add a new paragraph in section 8 on p.26 of 78/79 Calendar:
8.3 Withdrawal from Courses and from the University
Permission. of the Senior Supervisor is required to withdraw from
a course. If the Senior Supervisor is not yet appointed, permission of
the Chairman of the Graduate Program Committee is required. If such
permission is granted, a student may withdraw from a course without
academic penalty up to the end of the ninth week of classes in any
semester.
?
?
Under extenuating circumstances, a student may withdraw from
a course without academic penalty during the tenth to the twelfth
week of classes. Such circumstances must be beyond the control of the
student (e.g. medical or financial crisis). At the same time, 898
(Master t
s thesis research), 899 (Ph.D. research) or a similar course
may be added, as appropriate. The permission of the Senior Supervisor
and the Chairman of the Graduate Program Committee is required.
A student may withdraw from the University at any time by notifying
the chairman of his Graduate Program Committee and the Assistant Registrar
for Graduate Studies.
A student who has withdrawn from the University and who wishes
to re-enter shall apply for admission under the same conditions as any
other applicant.
(ii) change the second sentence of the second paragraph under 5. Withdrawal
from Program on p.35 of 78/79 Calendar so that the paragraph reads:
If a student withdraws from the graduate program before the end of
the semester, refunds will be based from the date the student officially
notifies the Registrar in writing of his withdrawal from the University.
Refunds will be made consistent with the policy outlined in the
Undergraduate Calendar section 7.8.

The new paragraph under 8.3 advertises what is presently possible
and done in special cases. The possible addition of 898, etc. permits the
counting of a semester in which all courses are dropped as a semester of
study and thus eliminates, in most cases, any financial penalty, other than
that associated with possible prolongation of the program of study.
