The
statistics on teacher supply are oonplicated
Iër that the vince continues to import a good many
teathes. Nevertheless the situation has changed somewhat in
ret years and it is quite clear that in certain academic dis-
ciplines and in the more attractive geographical areas job pros-
pects are not good for
new
teachers.
2.
Student selection.
The Faculty of Education at S.F. U. has limited
anroliiient sin
1968,
the University of Victoria has done
liJczise
in recent years and
the University of B.C. has recently announced
a
limit as well. The
teacher stply situation has discouraged
students from
applying
and our Faculty of Education is interested
in maintaining its position as the most selective. As recently as
three
years ago we could aoociiaodate only one out of three
qualified
)1iCants. This year alnost two-thirds were
admitted.

Faculty of
EthxatiCn is
defining its mission
to a greater
extent in
the expansion of the graduate program and
in responding to the
need for in-Service education for
practising
teachers. This shift is appropriate and
it
requires diverting
Faculty resources
iay from pre-service

into
those
activities desiTied to tçgrade the existing
