REPORT ON EXTENSION CREDIT COURSES
September 1, 1977 - August 31, 1978
For purposes of this report, the undergraduate extension credit course
offerings and corse enrollee figures for the period September 1, 1977
through August 31, 1978 are partitioned into on-campus (courses offered
during the evenings - after 4:30 p.m. - of the regular semesters and
during days or evenings of Intersession and Summer Session), off-campus
classroom based courses, and directed independent study (correspondence)
courses. A summary of the numbers of course of fcrings of each type and the
.numbers of course enrollees by course type is presentcd in Table 1, to-
gether with comparison figures for 1976-77. Overall, a total of
14,802
course enrollees was recorded in the 500 undergraduate on- and off-campus
1]
?
and directed independent study courses of the Departments and Faculties of
the University. The number of course enrollees was 3.4% greater than for
the same period of 1976-77. Additionally, the number of enrollees in these
courses represented about 22.4% of the total number of enrollees at the
University.
I. On-Campus Undergraduate Extension Credit Programs
The number of enrollees in the on-campus extension programs increased
slightly (1.7%) during 1977-78 relative to 1976-77. However, the per
course enrollment decreased slightly, from an all-time high of 35.2 in 1976-
77, to 33.5 during 1977-78. A summary of the number of courses and course
enrollees by Faculty for each programming period for 1977-78 and for 1976-77

is presented in Table 2.. Although each Faculty except Arts shdwedá

-78 relative to 1976-77, the differences;
are small and should not be regarded as presaging a trend.
II.
Off-Campus Undergraduate Credit Programs
A summary of the numbers of off-campus courses, by program, and
course enrollees, is presented in Table 3. The number of course enrollees
in these programs increased by about 20% relative to 1976-77 although the
per course number of enrollees dropped slightly to .14.6 from 15.3. Much
of the increase in the number of courses offered off--campus during 1977-78
as possible because of additional funding by Universities Council for
interior programming
III.
Directed Independent Study Courses
Thirteen different courses were available in this instructional mode
during 1977-78, four more than during 1976-77. Ten courses were offered
during the Fall Semester, 1977, with a total of 147 enrollees; 12 during
the Spring Semester, 1978, with 247 enrollees; and 11 during the Summer
Semester, 1978, with 236 enrollees. The total number of course enrollees
was about 14% greater than recorded during 1976-77.
IV.
Special Audit Students
The number of students attending classes as special audit students
(neither for credit nor audit) was 168 for 1977-78. The number of such
students during 1976-77 was 109.
