MEMORANDUM
Harry Evans, Registrar
?
From Bill Richards, Chairman Dept. of
CMNS Undergraduate Cirriculum Cttee.
Subject ?
CMS course changes for SCUS
?
I
Date ?
30/10/78
The Department of Communication wishes to make the following changes for its
Course offerings:
1.
The number of CMNS 222 changes as follows:
from ?
CMNS 222-3 Communication and Cultural Context
to ?
CMS 322-3 Communication and Cultural Context
The mode, meaning and method of communication within and
between cultural and national groups. The course will develop
a perspective in which to explore and interpret both cultural
differences and universal patterns of verbal and non-verbal
behavior. Most of the examples will be drawn from non-western
and third world situations.
Rationale:
The faculty members who originally proposed this course, and who will be
teaching it make the following arguement: "We believe this course is best suited
for the 300-level, and intended it to be a 300-level course when we made the
initial proposal. It is quite likely, in the time of preparation of a large number
of courses for approval, that this course received its present number through
misunderstanding or error. We have received a number of complaints from students
who found the material much too advanced for a 200-level course."
2.
The titles of CMNS 310 and CMNS 410 are changed as follows:
from
?
CMNS 310 History of Communication Thought I
CMNS 410 History of Communication Thought II
to
?
CMNS 310 Communication Thought in the Evolution of the Social
Sciences I
CMS 410 Communication Thought in the Evolution of the Social
Sciences II
Rationale:
The change is being proposed to reduce confusion that has been arising
over the similarity of the present titles of these courses with the title of
CMNS 210 History of Communication. The proposed titles are more accurate as
descriptors of the material offered in the courses. The phrase "evolution of
the social sciences" highlights the time period that the courses cover and suggests
the perspective that the study of "communication thought" will take. The content
of the courses is not changed.
