Examining Committee

Action undertaken by the Senate Committee on Graduate Studies at

its meeting on October 31, 1983, gives rise to the following motion:-

NOTION: "That Senate approve and recommend approval to the

?

Board of Governors the following changes:-

That the first sentence in the second paragraph of

section 1,9.2. of the General Regulations be changed

to read (changes underlined):

'At least six weeks before the proposed date of the

thesis examination, the candidate's Supervisory

Committee shall make a recommendation concerning the

date of the thesis examination and the composition

of the Examining Committee in conformity with 1.9.1.'

? and that the last sentence in this paragraph of

Section 1.9.2. be changed to read:

'The Examining Committee proposal shall reach the

Dean of Graduate Studies' Office at least one month

before the examination date."

Rationale:

As the current Regulations stand, (one month, two weeks), there is

insuffici

-

ent time for the approval of the Examining Committee for

Master's Degree candidates and for the receipt of the invitation by

the Examiner. In some faculties external examiners are required

from off campus and it is much preferable that they receive the

invitation to be an Examiner prior to receiving the copy of the

Thesis. Hence, these two minor modifications are requested to

the "Graduate Studies General Regulations".
