Action undertaken by the Senate Committee on Academic Planning
at its meeting of November 9, 1983 gives rise to the following motion:-
MOTION:

"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the Board - - -
of Governors, as set forth in S.83-102 , that the name
of the Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University
be changed to "Department of Mathematics and Statistics."
Note: If this change is approved it is intended that it be effective
from September 1, 1984.

At the Faculty of S&ience meeting on Monday, October 24, 1983 the following
motion was passed:
"That the name of the Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser
University be changed to 'Department of Mathematics and
Statistics'
Attached is a rationale for this change, provided by G.A.C. Graham,
Chairman of Mathematics.
I support this request and would ask that you place this on the Agenda
of the next SCAP meeting.

At a recent department meeting the following motion was approved:
"That the name of the Department of Mathematics at Simon
Fraser University be changed to "Department of Mathematics
and Statistics"."
There are a number of important reasons behind this motion.
We con-
sider that the new name will more accurately reflect the activities of the
department.
Many universities across Canada have either similarly named
departments or separate Departments of Statistics. The inclusion of
Statistics in the department name recognizes the importance and contribution
of Statistics to the department and Faculty of Science.
Another advantage is that potential graduate students are alerted to
the existence of Statistics as a discipline at Simon Fraser University.
