REPORT ON UNDERGRADUATE
EXTENSION CREDIT COURSES
May 1, 1982 - April 30, 1983
This report describes -the numbers of undergraduate extension
credit course offerings and associated course enrollee figures of
the Departments/Faculties of the University for the period May 1,
1982 through April 30, 1983.. By way of definition, extension
credit courses include those that are offered after 4:30 p.m. of
the regular semesters or during the days or evenings of Intersession
(May - June) or Summer Session (July - August) , those that are
offered in downtown Vancouver (day or evening), those that are
offered off-campus in a classroom (e.g., at Kelowna, Prince George),
and those that are available throughout the province via print or
5 ?
print and audio tapes - i.e., the Directed Independent Study (corre-
spondence) Course Program.
A summary of the numbers of extension credit course offerings
and the numbers of course enrollees for each type of extension
course is presented in Table 1. A total of 21,815 course enrollees
was recorded in 666 extension credit course offerings during 1982-83,
3.1% (655) more enrollees than for the same period Of 1981-82. The
number of enrollees represented 26.6%-of the total number of under-
graduate enrollees at the university during 1982-83 (82,145).

the three semesters of 1982-83 and 1981-82 is presented in Table
2. The number of enrollees was down marginally (-1.9%) during
1982-83 relative to 1981-82 as was the number of course offerings
(-6.6%, 524 vs 561 courses).
In terms of location, the number of course enrollees in the
Downtown Program was up slightly (4.0%, 2,231 vs 2,145) and the
On-campus Program was down (-2.7%, 15,765 vs 16,208) . With respect
to the latter, the number of course offerings and course enrollees
were down in Education and Interdisciplinary Studies during Summer,
1982 (13 and 8 courses, respectively) . The number of course enrol-
lees in the Fall Semester 1982 On-campus Program was also down
relative to the same period in 1981. Factors responsible include
a reduced number of sections of courses rather than the number of
courses per se and an apparent shift of some evening-only students
to day-time courses, possibly due to the higher level of unemploy-
ment brought about by the economic conditions of that time. Such
effects do not seem to suggest the existence of a trend, however,
as the Spring Semester 1982 Evening On-campus Program showed an
increase in course enrollees (+2.1%) in comparison with the Spring
Semester, 1981.
*The Faculty of Business Administration officially came into
existence in January, 1982. For descriptive comparisons, however,
this report treats the former Department of Business Administration
in the Faculty of Arts as a Faculty beginning with the Summer
Semester, 1981 (i.e., May, 1981)

Off-Campus Undergraduate Credit Programs
A summary of the number of off-campus lecture and seminar
courses and enrollees in such courses is presented, by program, in
Table 3. Exclusive of the Latin American Studies Field School,
which was not offered during 1982-83, the number of course enrollees
increased by 14%, primarily due to increases in programs provided
by the Faculty of Education. The Spring Semester, 1982, represented
- the conclusion of Arts and InterdisciplinaryStudiescourse offerings
at Kelowna.
III Directed Independent Study Courses
?
S
Thirty-four different courses were available in this instruc-
tional mode during 1982-83. The total number of offerings of these
courses was 99, thirty-one more than in 1981-82. The total number
of course enrollees was 3,215, an increase of 47.3 percent relative
to 1981-82.
IV Special Audit Students
The number of people attending classes, day or evening, on-
or off-campus, as special audit students during 1982-83 was 184,
a decrease of 42
.
(18.6%) over 1981-82.

the Extended Studies Diploma Program for 1982-83 is presented in
Table 4. It should be noted that this data does not represent
additional course enrollees to those already reported here or to
the overall university enrollment statistics. Students in these
programs take courses during the day or evening on-campus, off-
campus and by correspondence.
The 2,544 course enrollees recorded in these programs during
1982-83 represent a 17.9% increase relative to 1981-82. The pro-
grams reflecting the greatest increase are Criminology, Public
History, Senior Citizens, and Health and Fitness Studies. The
Extended Studies Diploma Program showed a.decrease of 207 (23%)
course enrollees due, primarily, to the moratorium on this type of
student in Computing Science courses and the
limited number of
spaces available in upper division Business
Administration courses.

has 15 semester hours of credit associated with it. The
majority of S.F.U. courses, including most of those reported
here, carry 3 - 5 semester hours of credit.
2 Five other courses in this program were offered at SFU/Down-
town during 1982-83. The 106 enrollees in those courses have
been included in the SFU/Downtowri totals.
