REPORT ON UNDERGRADUATE
EXTENSION CREDIT COURSES
?
May 1, 1981 - April 30, 1982
This report describes the numbers of undergraduate
extension credit course offerings and associated course en-
rollee figures of the Departments/Faculties of the Univer-
sity for the period May 1, 1981 through April 30, 1982. By
way of definition, extension credit courses include those
that are offered on-campus after 4:30 p.m. of the regular
semesters or during the days or evenings of Intersession
(May - June) or Summer Session (July - August), those that
are offered in downtown Vancouver (day or evening), those
that are offered off-campus in a classroom (e.g. , at Kelowna,
5 ?
Prince George), and those that are available throughout the
province via print or print and audio tapes -
i.e. ,
the
Directed Independent Study (correspondence) Course Program.
A summary of the numbers of extension credit course
offerings and the numbers of course enrollees for each type
of extension course is presented in Table 1. Atotal of
21,160 course enrollees was recorded in 684 extension credit
course offerings during 1981-82, 10.1% (1,935) more enrollees
than for the same period of 1980-81. This increase accounted
for slightly more than one-half of the 4.8% increase to the
total university undergraduate enrollment for the period
(76,290 course enrollees, 3,471 more than for 1980-81). The

On-Campus and Downtown Undergraduate Extension Credit
Programs
A summary of the number of courses and course enrollees
by Faculty for each of the three semesters of 1981-82 and
1980-81 is presented in Table 2. Course enrollees increased
by 1,331 or 7.8%. The Downtown Program attracted 322 (17.7%)
more enrollees in 1981-82 than in 1980-81 (2,145 vs. 1,823);
the On-Campus Programs increased by 1,009 (6.6%) enrollees
over the same period (16,208 vs. 15,199). On a Faculty
basis, Arts and Education recorded increases of 8.0% and
6.2%, respectively, and Interdisciplinary Studies remained
about the same as last year. The Faculty of Science recorded
a
54.7%
increase in enrollees, the larger part of this in-
crease occurring during the Fall Semester, 1981.
II ?
Off-Campus Undergraduate Credit Programs
A summary of the number of off-campus courses and course
enrollees by program is presented in Table 3. About one-
half of the
145%
increase in enrollees in these programs is
attributable to the Latin American Studies Field School
which was held in Peru during the Summer, 1981 but not offered

during 1980. The remainder of the increase occurred primarily
in courses offered at interior sites in support of Faculty
of Education programs and in courses offered as part of
the Senior Citizens Certificate Program at such places as
Edmonds House in Burnaby and Brock House in Vancouver.
III Directed Independent Study Courses
Twenty-nine different courses were available in this
instructional mode during 1981-82. The total number of
offerings of these courses was 68, nine more than in 1980-81.
The total number of course enrollees was 2,183, an increase
of 23 percent relative to 1980-81.

Special Audit Students
The number of people attending classes, day or evening,
on- or off-campus, as special audit students during 1981-82
was 226, an increase of
lL
(6.6%) over 1980-81.
V ?
Certificate and Diploma Programs
Course enrollee data for the six certificate programs
and the Extended Studies Diploma program for 1981-82 is
presented in Table 4. It should be noted that this data
does not represent additional course enrollees to those
already reported here or
,
to the overall university enroll-
ment statistics. Students in these programs take courses

during the day or evening on-campus, off-campus and by
correspondence.
The 2,158 course enrollees recorded in these programs
during 1981-82 represent a 17% increase relative to 1980-81.
The programs reflecting the greatest increase are Public
History, Senior Citizens, and Health and Fitness Studies.
