SENATE UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS
From

WARY
.........................
18 NOVEMBER 1982.
Date
.................................................
Action undertaken by the Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board,
gives rise to the following motion:-
MOTION:
"That Senate approve
?
-
as set forth. In S.82-133
That for admission from B.C. Grade XII
the requirement of a Language 11 OR
a Science 11 be revised to; a Language
11 AND a Science 11. That this revision
be implemented for applicants to the
1985 Fall Semester and subsequently"
S
RATIONALE:
The SUAB reviewed the current admission policy for Grade XII
graduates
'
and felt that in order to attract more of the top
academic students, it Is Important to maintain high standards.
In view of the nature of counselling in schools it is desirable
that there be reasonable comparability with UBC. This revision
to our requirements will increase to six the number of academic
courses (excluding three core courses), demanded for admission.
This compares with seven at UBC and four at the University of
Victoria.

MEMORANDUM
S
0........SENATE
................................................
UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS
BOARD
Subject ...
REVIEW OF B.C. GRADE XII
REQUIREMENTS - SUAB 99
ALAN C. McMILLAN
From
.....................................................
SECRETARY, S.U.A.B.
Date ..... 15TH
OCTOBER, 198.
The Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board last
reviewed the admission requirements for B.C.
Secondary Scho1grduates in the Fall of 1978.
As a result of that review, recommendations were
made to Senate increasing our admission average
from
2.0
to
2.5
and demanding an additional
academic Grade XII subject and a Language XI, or
a Science XI. These changes were phased in over
a three-year period, from 1979 through 1981.
The rationale for the new requirements was a
desire to attract a better calibre student and
to keep pace with UBC and the University of
Victoria.
The current requirements for the three Universi-
ties are listed on the following page.

At a recent meeting of the Ministry of Education Post-
Secondary Advisory Committee, representatives from UBC
and the University of Victoria indicated that they were
both reviewing their requirements this Fall. The
representatives were unable to indicate if any changes
would result from their review. It would appear that
the University of Victoria may demand an additional
Academic 12-level subject, bringing them in line with
UBC and ourselves.
The Ministry of Education have introduced two Grade 11
courses. They include Composition 11 and Writing 11.
These courses are available as electives in the
secondary school programme.
Another recent development in the Ministry is the
possible introduction of provincial examinations. As
yet, there are no details on this topic.
