NEW COURSE PROPOSAL
?
HUM. 390-3 Directed Studies in Humanities
SEE APPENDIX A
RATIONALE:
A directed studies course in the humanities
would allow students who have taken the regular
courses to pursue further individual study in
areas of the humanities. Given that the program
is small and will remain a minor program, a
further directed study course would enhance the
student's choices without expanding the program's
core program. The course will also benefit those
students who do not choose to complete the minor
but who wish to continue study in areas not
regularly offered by departments or by the
Humanities program. It should be understood
that the topics would have a conceptual or
historical relationship to the Humanities.
CHANGE OF DESCRIPTION ?
HUM. 400-5 Humanities Proseminar
PROM: This course requires. the completion of a
substantial essay on an approved topic
related to the Humanities. The essay will
be written under the supervision of one
of the faculty members from the Committee
on the Humanities. In addition, students
will participate in a series of colloquia
which are held in conjunction with the
course.
TO: ?
This course requires undertaking substantial
research culminating in the completion of an
essay on a humanities topic which has been.
approved by the Steering Committee. The
essay will be written underthe supervision
of a faculty member on the humanities
Committee or a faculty member designated
by the Committee. In addition students
will participate in colloquia held in
conjunction with the course.
SEE APPENDIX B
RATIONALE:
The change of course description makes it
explicit that the Steering Committee may wish to
allow faculty outside of the Committee to supervise
the essay. This will allow greater flexibility
in the administration of the program and will
allow students more latitude in finding a suitable
supervisor.
