at its meeting of June 29, 1982 gives rise to the following motions:-
MOTION 1:
Mathematical Physics Honors PrOgram - "That Senate approve
and recommend approval to the Board of Governors, as set
forth in S.82-85, that MATH 469-4 - Fluid Dynamics be
replaced by MATH 362-3 - Fluid Mechanics I and MATH 462-3 -
Fluid Mechanics II, as alternatives in the Mathematical
Physics Program.”
MOTION 2:
Physics - "Students may not receive and use credit for both
PHYS 101 - General Physics I and PHYS 120 - Physics I.
Students may not receive and use credit for both PHYS 102 -
General Physics II and PHYS 121 - Physics II."
MOTION 3:
Physics - "A change in requirements for Physics Major and
Physics Honors Programs from "Non-Science elective minimum

I.
The Mathematical Physics Committee wishes the following changes to be
made in the Hon. Math. Physics Program:
Delete Math 469-4 (Fluid Mechanics), which has been withdrawn by
the Math Department; insert in its place Math 362-3 (Fluid Mechanical)
Math-462-3 (Fluid Mechanicalt)
Background
Some time ago we were told informally that the Math Department contemplated
this-change in its Fluid Mechanics offerings, and we decided, also informally,
that if and when the change was made we would respond as above. I was
never officially informed of these changes in Math offerings. When the
first drafts of calendar changes were requested this year, I found no
record of official approval of those course changes, but by the time the
final proofs were available the changes by the Math Department were
official. I therefore, altered the Math Physics calendar entry accordingly,
which resulted in a memo from Nick Heath (attached) to the effect that
the change must be "submitted through normal channels".

(i)
For F-82-7(a) ?
(SENATE MOTION #2)
Rationale: Phys 101 and Phys 120 are too
similar
to allow credit
hours to be given for both courses. However, we do
not want to prevent a student from taking both for a
specific reason - for example, to satisfy a transfer
requirement. It should be noted that such situations
?
arise infrequently.
G.P.A. Calculation: When students take
Phys 101 and .Phys 120,
only the better grade of the, two courses should be
used in calculating
the grade point
average (unless
requested to do othexwise by the student).
• ?
Exactly the
same discussion applies to Phys. 102 and
Phys 121.
(ii) For F-82-7(b)
(SENATE MOTION
#3)
Rationale: I'bst of our Physics students have been
taking Computing
Science courses as Non-Science Electives. We feel
that the new elective requirement will help to
broaden the outlook of our students.
