Action undertaken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies at its meeting of June 15, 1982 gives rise to the following
motion:

That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
Board of Governors, as set forth in S.82-69, the
proposed changes in English as follows:
i)
New courses - ENGL 491-2 - Honors Seminar A;
ENGL 492-2 - Honors Seminar B.
ii)
Addition of a requirement in Literary
Criticism (using ENGL 364-4 - History and
Principles of Literary Criticism) to the
Honors program.

iii) Substitution of ENGL 491-2 and ENGL 492-2
for ENGL 494-4 and ENGL 495-4 as required
courses in the Honors program.
For Information
Acting under its delegated authority at its meeting of June 15,
1982, SCUS approved the eventual phasing out of two courses following the
approval for the offering of ENGL 491-2 and ENGL 492-2: ENGL 494-4 -
Honors Directed Reading, and ENGL 495-4 - Honors Directed Research. SCUS
also approved titles changes for:
ENGL 318-4 - from Dryden, Pope, Swift
to ?
Major Authors of the Restoration and Eighteenth Century:

The Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee at its meeting of May 13,
1982 passed the following motion:
That the Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee approve
the changes to the English Honors program which include
adding new honors seminars, ENGL 491-2 and ENGL 492-2,
as required courses and phasing out the present required
courses ENGL 494-4 and ENGL 495-4, and addin

a requirement
in Literary Criticism to be met by ENGL 364-4.
The Committee also approved changes in title for ENGL 318 and ENGL 320.
Would you please place these changes on the agenda of the next meeting
of SCUS.

for the student
who has a special interest in Fngiish Literature,
and wishes to pursue his or her 3tudies beyond
the course-work required for the major. The
program will provide experience In thtee areas:
a core of essential knowledge of criticism provided
by ENGL 364 (Histcry and Principles of Literary
Criticism), discussion of selected topics jntwo

seminars, and, with the honors essay,
independent writing and research on a topic of
the student's choice.

In our present honors program English 49

writing the honors essay. While some excellent essays have
been produced under this program, the department has found
disadvantages
honors essay: the

The department's Undergraduate Curriculum Committee will be
responsible for seeing that the topics vary from semester to
semester. Honors students will take two of these seminars.
The seminars are separate from the honors essay; what is studied
in the seminars need not be incorporated into the essay.
