It is intended that these changes commence for September 1982.
The Senate Committee on Academic Planning also considered these
changes at its meeting of May 12, 1982, and the following major points were
noted: First, the proposal will not have budget implications beyond funding
levels which are now available or which will follow from "Normal" re-allocations
of existing resources. Second, if approved, continuation of the program beyond
1982/83 will be the responsibility of permanent faculty. Work loads will be
adjusted on an individual basis to provide for this.
Attention to compositional skills in the manner proposed will be
restricted to those students who are enrolled in the four English courses
identified.
For Information: ?
Calendar description of courses -
"The following four courses will examine representative works
of literature, selected primarily from the Twentieth Century,
in order to develop a critical awareness of the approaches to
experience which modern literature reflects and the techniques
it employs, and to explore problems of literary evaluation.
Each course will involve attention to compositional skills
through individual meetings with a tutor."

The proposal to reorganize the 100 level courses in the
Department of
English will not have budget implications beyond funding levels which are
now available or
which will follow from "normal" reallocations of existing
resources.
In the first year (1982-83) $60,000 has been allocated by the
Academic
ovide for the phasing out of

This money, plus some
"soft"
money
added from my own
budget
(which comes from departmental faculty on leave),
will provide for the employment of some (up to 3 1/3) lecturers to phase
in the new system. Existing T.A. resources used In the 100 level courses
will be sufficient to
meet those costs.
Continuance of the program beyond 1982-83 will be the reponsibilitY of
permanent faculty. Workloads will be adjusted on an individual basis to
provide for this.

The Proposal
The proposal recommends that the present 2-lecture/1-tutorial mode be
altered to a 2_lecture/1_tutorial/1-labO
rator
Y hour mode. The additional
hour is designated as a "laboratory" hour. These hours will be scheduled
to meet in a classroom every week throughout the semester--twelve meetings.
Six of these meetings would consist of a formal class dealing with aspects
of composition. The other six meetings would be used at the discretion of
the T.A. for consultation with individual students, or small groups of students
with special problems. Classes so used should take over most of the
activities presently conducted during TA office hours now designated as
"attention to compositional skills through individual meetings with a tutor."
Some office hours for individual meetings and drop-in matters would be retained,
the amount to be determined by the department.
The six classes on-composition would be discussions which would focus on
problems emerging from the writing assignments. Discussions would focus both on
..
?
problems of written expression and on problems of interpreting the literary
material through reading and writing about literature. Students with E.S.L.
problems or other writing problems would be referred to "open labs" designated
in the schedule booklet as attached to the 100 level courses. Depending on
instructional availability some "open lab" time would also be available on a
drop-in basis. The calendar description of our 100 level courses**still applies,
but we will be improving the way in which we attend to compositional skills. It
is expected that the actual work load of.. the teaching assistant may vary depending
on the demands of particular assignments, or the
.
needs of particular students,
but any planned increase inwork, for example preparation for the "labs", would
be taken into account in terms of the present or future TSSIJ collective agreement.
Credit earned in the course would remain 3 CR.
II.
Objectives
1.
To formalize T.A. time now spent on individual conferences by placing
a portion of their "floating"two-hour work load into a classroom setting.
The remainder of T.A. time given over to instruction would be used for
individual conferences.
2.
To provide workshop sessions for T.A.'s before and during the
semester that would assist them in preparing for labs. These
workshops would take into account matters important to faculty
teaching 100 level courses and would offer suggestions for dealing
