MOTION: "That Senate approve and recommend approval to
the Board of Governors, as set forth in S.82-61,
the proposed change in lower level elective
structure in Criminology."
For Information:
Acting under delegated authority at its meeting of May 4, 1982,
the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies approved change
of prerequisite for CRIM 462-15 - Field Practice to require a
minimum CGPA of 2.5 as prerequisite for that course.

CHANGE OF LOWER LEVEL ELECTIVE STRUCTURE
Nature of Proposed Chang. The number of Group A elective
courses would be increased by one course for a total of
two Group A electives. The number of general electives
would be reduced by one course yielding a total of five
general electives. Overall, the total of lower level
course types would be as follows:
Group A:
?
6 required + 2 elective courses
Group B:
?
5 required + 2 elective courses
Other: ?
5 elective courses
Rationale:
?
?
It was the intention of the Criminology U.C.C.?
to have the above change formalized in the
1982-83 calendar. However several last minute
changes relating to the statistics and other
requirements led to an oversight in this regard.
In order to provide the necessary breadth of
lower level Group A optional courses, it is
our intention that criminology students be
required to take one additional Group A elective.
ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITE FOR CRIM 462-15 (FIELD PRACTICE)
Nature of Proposed Change. ?
A minimum C.G.P.A.of 2.5 would?
be a prerequisite for Crirn 462-15.
Rationale: As indicated in the Senate Proposal S78-75, Crim
462-15 was intended as an optional and competitive
component
of the Criminology Undergraduate
Curriculum. It has always been the intention of
the Criminology U.C.C. to institute a minimum
C.G.P.A. as a basic screening criterion. Because
field placement students must be seen as represent-
ing both the Criminology Department and Simon
Fraser University within professional criminal
justice settings, it is necessary to ensure that
departmental standards are raised to an appropriate
level. It is important to note that this change

supplements rather than replaces the prerequisites
requiring "prior departmental approval" and a
grade
