PROPOSED REGULATIONS CHANGE
BACKGROUND
Up to the present time we have admitted a small number of transfer
students from regional colleges into one or other of our co-op programs. The
colleges are showing more interest in co-op education, and if, as I expect,
the federal government re-introduces incentive grants ftr co-op programs, the
colleges will move faster. We can expect a faster flow of students for degree
completion and some will have had co-op job practicum experience.
Cariboo College currently operates a successful co-op job practicum
program in Sciences. Both U. Victoria and UBC have agreed to accept first
practicum equivalency. The Cariboo Chemistry Department wishes SFU to consider
doing likewise. For this specific reason and for the general reason
above we
propose change in our present co-op regulations to accommodate the known B.C.
college situation as well as students who may transfer here from other university
co-op programs.
Senate Paper S.78-73, Motion 2, Item 11 gives the present regulation.
A recommendation is made for change of regulation to the following:-
"Transfer students should normally start with one semester
on campus in order both to take part in the job competition
as well as getting to know and be known by their department
coordinator. Transfer students should be admitted to the
program appropriate to their standing usually subject to the
requirements of completing four successful work semesters
normally concluding with a study semester; however, students
transferring from an approved co-op program elsewhere who
have successfully completed a first work semester, or a first
and second work semester, on the recommendation of the appro-
priate SFU co-op coordinator may be exempted from the first,
or the first and second, work semester of the SFU program.
Appropriate entry will be made on transcript."
