qERQN1PL0GY PROPOSAL
November 26th, 198].
Date
.......................................................
This is
to
provide Senate with additional background information on the
proposal for a Diploma Program in Gerontology. The following points summarize the
background of the proposal:
1.
The proposal originated in.anàdhocCommittee chaired by Dean J. Blaney with the
following membership: Ames, Chow, Fattah, Gutman, Herzog, Horsfall, Manley-Casimir,
Diewert. The key person on this committee was Dr. Gloria Gutman, a specialist
in gerontology who has a term appointment jointly between Continuing Studies and
Psychology.
2.
The ad-hoc Committee studied the need for a program in B.C. and similar programs
at other institutions. They determined that initially, the greatest need was
for a Diploma and the attached proposal was developed to meet that need.
3.
The ad-hoc Committee recommended that the program be administered by the Faculty
of Interdisciplinary Studies and consequently the Committee was reconstituted as
a Committee of that Faculty and Professor Ezzat Fattah took over as Chairman.
• ?
The Faculty home proposed for the Program is not considered to be crucial.
4.
When the proposal was considered by SCAP, it was emphasized that while we expect
that it will be submitted to UCBC with a request for New and Emergent Program
Funding we are also exploring other possible sources of funding. These sources
include private donors and foundations. Research support in the area of gerontology
has been requested In a strategic grant request to SSHRC. It is understood that
the proposed Program cannot be implemented unless satisfactory funding is forth-
coming.
S. The Program builds on a number of existing courses from several departments.
It also proposes 2 new Gerontology Courses (GERO 300 and 400) and requires a new
Kinesiology corn-se (KIN 461). In addition a new Kinesiology course (KIN 460)
and a Criminology course (CRIM 411) have been developed as electives. Note that
CRIM 411 will become a regular offering of the Criminology Department but that
the other courses will only be offered after the Program is approved and funded.
(General Studies course numbers may be used for trth1 offerings of the GERO courses
before the Program is formally initiated).
