gives rise to the following motion.
MOTION:
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the Board of
Governors, as set forth in S.81-72the proposed new courses:
RUSS 211-3 Intermediate Practice in Russian Translation;
RUSS 310-3 Projects in Russian Translation I;
RUSS 311-3 Projects in Russian Translation II."
It was reported that library holdings have increased to support
new programs, that the proposed courses have the strong support of
the Department, and the Department does not require any new faculty
members to teach the three courses.

These new Russian courses represent an attempt by the Russian Division
to meet a perceived demand. Unlike the other Divisions where the emphasis
is always on the spoken language, there appears to be much more of a demand
in Russian for translation courses, literature in translation, etc. The
proposed courses would be an alternative for those who prefer to follow this
route. It should be emphasized that in order to get a Minor or Major degree
in Russian, every student would still be required to attain the degree of
proficiency in spoken Russian which normally results from having taken our
full set of introductory Russian courses.

Rationale - Proposed RUSS 211, RUSS 310 and 311
The proposed courses, in combination with already existing RUSS 110, ill,
form a projected series of courses which is intended to provide an alternative
to the existing series of broad language skill courses. This alternative
provides instruction focused on reading and written translation from Russian
into English, and practically excludes training in speaking, aural comprehension
and composition in Russian.
During the past year, the Russian Division surveyed the other Departments of
the University to determine what sort of Russian instruction would be useful
to their students. Although replies were not received from all units, those
that were received seemed to suggest that the alternative we are now proposing
would be widely welcomed. In particular we concluded that a large segment of
demand exists for training in reading and translating written non-fiction
material, and that the type of training would have to
be individualized
to a
sufficient extent to accommodate small numbers of students from many different
disciplines. In other words, we do not propose such courses as are sometimes
found entitled "Russian for Scientists", "Russian for Humanities", etc. but
rather, courses in which students are allowed to pursue their particular
interests while receiving classroom instruction in the core of problems common
to all.
Although the proposed courses are to be introduced during the next two years
(1982-83), we are seeking approval for them all at once, since we would like
to assure prospective students that a coherent sequence of courses exists in
which they can expect to gain a worthwhile level of proficiency in translating
written Russian. Furthermore, on the basis of this course sequence and certain
other prerequisites that will be determined, we hope to apply for approval to
grant some type of certificate of translation proficiency.
We believe that such recognition of a special skill would be attractive to
students working for degrees in several areas where Russian is, next to English,
the most important language of publication.

Russian 211
Intermediate Practice in Russian Translation
This is a course in which students will gain much additional facility
in reading and making translations of the sort of Russian prose for which they
gained basic preparation in Russian 110-111. (Students who have gone through
Russian 100-101-201 will find themselves at a somewhat similar level with
respect to the written language). As the chief activity of this course, students
will engage in guided translation of materials of moderate difficulty which they
themselves have selected. ?
In the process of covering these materials in the
classroom, various points of grammar and word-formation not covered in previous
courses will be learned.
In the beginning of the course, students will be aided in the selection of
materials in their field of interest.
During the remainder of the semester students will have regular opportunities
during class sessions to bring forward problems which
they are encountering in their
translations; these will serve as points of discussion by the group as a whole. It
is expected in this way that students will exchange much experience among themselves
to their mutual benefit. There will be three class essions per week and the
Instructor will of course be available at other times for individual consultation.
Students will be expected to present to the Instructor such translations as they
have completed on a biweekly basis. Final grading will be based first on quality
and second on quantity of translation produced during the term. In addition there
will be several short quizzes testing grasp of major points of grammar and word-
formation encountered during the course.

Projects in Russian Translation
I
This course is Intended to allow students who have completed at least second-
year Russian to
pursue guided individual work learning to effectively translate
1ifficult materials in their own special areas of interest. The course involves
individual translation projects which are regularly rep'rted upon in the class
sessions.
In the initial two weeks, students are given a general review of problems of
translation from Russian. During that period students are aided in selecting
material for their translation project, if they have not already done so. In this
process, it will often be possible for students to obtain advice from other depart-
ments concerning useful and interesting material for translation.
During the remainder of the course, each student will have regular opportunities
to report in class on problems arising in his translation. Each week there will be
three class sessions in which mutual exchange of experience on translation problems
will be encouraged, and certain areas of major difficulty will be explained by the
instructor.
Students will be expected to present to the instructor completed portions of their
translations on a biweekly basis.
Grading will be based on the quality of completed
translations in
relation to the
students' level of ability in Russian.

Russian 311-3
Projects, in Russian Translation II
This course will be conducted in a manner similar to Russ.310, i.e.
a combination of independent work and reporting on translation.problems
in organized class sessions. Instruction will be devoted to further,
more difficult problems of translating Russian written language.
Special attention will be given to sources of information and means
• of dealing with obscure words and expressions, new words and terminology.
Grading will be based on the quality of students' translation, in
terms of both accuracy and style.
