Studies at its meeting of January 27, 1981 gives rise to the following
motion:

Admission and General Regulations
(1) Applicants to the Professional Development Program must be attending
Simon Fraser University or be admissible to SFU. (See
Admission Require-
ments, Section 2.4.)
(a)
Candidates who have attended SFU in one or more of the 3 semesters
prior to the intended registration in the Professional Development Pro-
gram are required to submit the "Professional Development Program
Application" to the Office of Admissions, Registrar's Office.
(b)
Candidates who have not attended SFU previously, or who have not
attended SFU in any of the 3 semesters prior to their intended registra-
tion in the Professional Development Program, must submit
the
"Pro-
fessional Development Program Application" and the "Application for
Admission to Simon Fraser University" to the Office of Admissions,
Registrar's Office.

(c)
All applications should be submitted to the Office of Admissions, Regis-
trar's Office, approxinuttely 105 days before commencment of classes,
hence the deadlines are:
May 15 for the Fall Semester and
September 15 for the Spring Semester.
Late applications will be considered only if space is available.
(2) (a) Students arc admitted to th Professional Development Program on
completion of a minimum of 60 semester hours of courses acceptable for
credit at SFU.

Students must complete a minimum of 60 semester hours by the end
?
of August prior to entry into the following Spring Semester.
(b)
Before admission to the program, applicants may be required to demon-
strate competence in written and oral English.
(c)
Students may be asked to submit evidence of good health before being
considered for admission to the program.
—(d) Students may be required to have an interview before being considered
for admission to the program.
(e) In the event that the number of applicants to the Professional Develop-
ment Program exceeds facilities and staffing capabilities, the Admissions
Committee will select those candidates considered to be best qualified.
(3) Students must complete normal SFU registration procedures before com-
mencing studies in any semester of the Professional Development Program.
(4) (a) Students normally complete the program in three consecutive semesters,
However, students with valid reasons may be given permission by the
Director of Professional Programs to interrupt their participation in the
program. A formal request from the student must be submitted in writ-
ing to the Director. Re-admission to the program may be achieved only
after compL'ting a re-entry application to the Faculty of Education sub-
mitted THREE months prior to the start of the semester in which the
student proposes to resume his studies.
—.-------....__(b) An interruption from the program requested by a student may normally
last no longer than a maximum of four semesters.
(c) Students who have indicated their intention to undertake a given semes-
ter of the Professional Development Program and who do not honor
this commitment are considered to have withdrawn from the program.
Permission to re-enter is not given automatically (see (4Xa) above).
- (5) Students who are required to withdraw from the program must wait for a
period of two years to have their case reviewed for re-entry, unless otherwise
stated in writing at the time of the withdrawal.
(6)
The academic and professional records of all students who have completed
the three semesters of the Professional Development Program will be sub-
ject to review by the Faculty before a recommendation for certification is
forwarded to the Department of Education.
(7)
EDUC 401, 402, 405 arc to be regarded as full-time professional studies and
may not be taken in conjunction with other academic or professional
Courses.

(8) Course Challenge - EDUC 405:
Students with a minimum of one year's approved teaching experience at a
level corresponding to grades taught in the B.C. public school system, may
challenge EDUC 405 subject to the following:
(a)
Applications for Course Challenge will be considered according to the
generally established requirements and procedures. See
Registration,
Section 5.5 and General
Regulations,
Section 6.2.
(b)
Students will be allowed to register in Course Challenge for EDUC 405,
normally only while registered in EDUC 401/402. Additional full fees will
be levied for challenging EDUC 405 regardless of whether the challenge
is sucecssful.
(C)
Course Challenge credit for EDUC 405 will not be granted before sue-
ecssful completion of EDUC 401/402.
(d)
For those who are successful in challenging EDIJC 405, the maximum
amount of credit allowable through a combination of Course Challenge
and Transfer Credit shall be 75 hours rather than the normal 60 hours.
(e)
Further information on the 405 challenge practicum is available at the
office of the Director of Professional Programs.
Requirements
The applicant should:
(1)
have taught in a public school or other context closely related to a public
school with a regular teaching assignment, i.e. carolled in a class for at least
?
ten continuous months;
(2)
hvc taught 5
ludcots at the ae/gradc level equivalent to the level requested
and complementary to the candidate's academic preparation;
(3)
have teaching experience in the coniext of subject field taught in British
Columbia public schools;
(4)
have relatively recent teaching experience (i.e. should have occurred not
more than five years prior to the application for challenge);
(5)
have taught at least in a school setting where English was the normal
language of instruction and where the curriculum was reasonably similar to
a North American public school curriculum;
(6)
apply for course challenge for EDUC 405
the first week of EDIJC 401;
(7)
submit letters of recommendation from at least two persons able to make
inlbrnied judgments about the quality of the student's prior teaching experi-
ence;
(8)
have strong recommendations from school and faculty associates during
EDUC 401;
(9)
have approval of the Director of Professional Programs.

"that the Faculty of Education approve for 1982/11983 the following
change as described in FE 80-28 to item two of the Professional
Development Program's admissions and general regulations specified on
page 266 of the University's 1981/82 undergraduate calendar:
(2)(a) Students are admitted to the Professional Development Program
on completion of a minimum of 60 semester hours of courses
