Action undertaken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies, at its meeting of December 9, 1980, gives rise to the follow-
ing motion:

Calendar Description of Course:
Supervised observation/teaching, equivalent in time to Education 401, in an
accredited instructional setting in British Columbia. This practicum is designed
to offer educators an opportunity to change their instructional emphasis or to
familiarize themselves with current instructional strategies.
Nature of Course: Practicum
- Prerequisites (or special instructions):
EDUC 405 or equivalent and permission of Director of Professional Programs.
Permission will not normally be given to students without previous teaching
experience. - Grading will be on a Pass/Withdraw basis.*

At a previous
P.P.C.
Meeting (November 5, 1979) alternative
programs were categorized into three types:
a) specialized programs (within the pre-service. certification
route),
b)
teacher upgrading (extension) and retraining programs,
c)
programs for those performing Instructional roles outside
the public school system.
After discussion of these types of programs. it was the general
feeling of P.P.C. that at present any development of alternatives
in

focus on the first two types of programs.

5.1
The following guidelines be established In considering
alternatives In P.D.P.:
a)
That the Spring semester Intake normally will provide the

focus for offering alternative programs.
b)
That academic and administrative support is deemed to be
feasible before an alternative is implemented so as to
ensure appropriate academic content, organizational planning,
staffing, special placements, budget and facilities.
c)
Any alternative program is subject to review on an on-going
basis.
d)
Any new alternative programs must be approved by the meeting
of the faculty of Education.
