in the Canadian Studies curriculum
The Department of History has made a number of changes in its courses with Canadian
content, of which we were made aware only today. The changes, in effect, invalidate
much of that portion of the Canadian Studies curriculum based on History courses. The
need for Canadian Studies to copy the relevant changes made by the History Department
is self-evident. It is important that we obtain approval for these changes in time for
the revisions to be included in the 1981/82 edition of the calendar. The corresponding
changes in the History Departments section of the calendar have already been processed.
Could you please arrange, as soon as possible, for the Faculty of Interdisciplinary
Studies Undergraduate Curriculum Committee to consider the following changes to the
Centre for Canadian Studies curriculum:
l.a. DELETE: HIST 429-3 French Canada in the 19th and 20th Centuries
b. ADD: ?
HIST 328-3 The Province of Quebec from Confederation
The economic, social, political and cultural history of Quebec.
(Lecture/Tutorial)
Prerequisite: HIST 101, 102 recommended.
2.a. DELETE: HIST 432-3 Canadian West
b. ADD: ?
HIST 435-3 The Canadian Prairies
Selected problems in the social, 'economic, and political development of
the Canadian Prairies.

Canada with emphasis on a particular region or native policy.
(N.B. No. 3 a. and b. comprise a change in number and level only -
the. description has not changed.)

The substitution of HIST 328-3 for HIST 429-3 should also apply to the French
Canadian Studies Certificate Program.

by Canadian Studies Steering Committee members to these curriculum changes be conveyed
to me no later than 10 November. I am not, however, anticipating any objections as the
validity of the changes is self-evident. (If any objections are received, I will
contact you on 11 November to withdraw this request.) I would appreciate FIDS UGCC
consideration of the proposals as soon as is practicable, so that they may be submitted
to SCUS' next meeting, if approved by. the faculty curriculum committee.

STEERING COMMITTEE NOTES
1. ?
Changes in History courses for Canadian Studies credit
There are a few changes to the History Department curriculum which should be
reflected in the Centre's list of Canadian content courses.
?
These changes have
only just come to our attention, as we were preparing revisions to the Centre for
Canadian Studies calendar entry.
?
Owing to extreme time constraints,
we
have submitted
the curriculum changes as calendar revisions and hope to receive the necessary approv-
als by the time the galleys are returned.
?
Of course, if approval of these changes to
accordingly.
the Canadian Studies curriculum is not forthcoming, the calendar
entry will
be adjusted
The proposed changes to the Centre for Canadian Studies list of Canadian content
courses are identical to the corresponding changes that have already been carried out
in the History curriculum.
?
They are as follows:
l.a. DELETE: ?
HIST 429-3 ?
French Canada in the 19th and 20th Centuries
b. ADD: ?
HIST 328-3 ?
The Province of Quebec from Confederation
The economic, social, political and cultural history of Quebec.

the Canadian Prairies.
c. ADD: ?

Selected problems in the social, cultural, economic, and political
development of British Columbia.

Canada with emphasis on a particular region or native policy.
(N.B. ?

the description has not changed.)
4.
?
The substitution of H!ST 328-3 for HIST 429-3 should also apply to the French
Canadian Studies Certificate Program.
If you disagree with any of these planned, curriculum changes, please contact me
"immediately. If any member of the Steering Committee wishes, I shall call a meeting
of the Committee to discuss and decide on the matter. If I receive no objections by
10 November 1980, I will consider that the Steering Committee approves these changes
to the Canadian Studies curriculum and will process them accordingly.
