prior to their enrolment, in order to ensure enrolling only those students
who have a keen interest in film-making.
FPA. 176-3
1
Photography as an Art Form

a ?
FPA. 225-2, Ballet for Modern Dance and
FPA. 226-2
1
Ballet for Modern Dance II
The names of the above courses are to be changed to "Ballet I"
and "Ballet II" respectively.
On page 2 of the document entitled Curriculum Changes FPA Major, the words "or
contemporary music" have been added in two places. Also on page 2, item (ii)
under Upper Division Requirements, the words "Upper Division courses within the
Centre for the Arts but outside the discipline" have been added in order to
define the fact that students require 12 hours of credit outside their major
discipline but still within the Centre for the Arts course offerings.
The above items were discussed and approved at a meeting of the Faculty of
Interdisciplinary Studies Undergraduate Curriculum Committee held on Tuesday,
October 21, 1980. Would you please place them on the next agenda of the
Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies.

CURRICULAR CHANGES ?
FPA.132-3 & FPA.133-3
1. Present Calendar
(a)
FPA.132-3 INTRODUCTION TO FILM-MAKING
An exploration of the creative processes essential to the art of
film. A study of photographic imagery and the construction of
image sequences will lead to the production of a very brief film
by each student. (Lecture/Studio)
Students should expect to pay a laboratory fee.
Students with credit for FPA.130 of G.S.142 may not take this
course for further credit.
(b)
FPA.133-3 FILM-MAKING FUNDAMENTALS
An extension of the work begun in FPA.132 with emphasis on the
techniques of 16mm film production.
Prerequisite: FPA.132
Students should expect to pay a laboratory fee.

this course for
An extension of the work begun in FPA.132.
This course is
designed to enhance an understanding of the 16mm motion picture
format with some emphasis on the problems imposed by film
technology. After learning proper technical procedures, students
will make a 1-3 minute 16mm film to further explore the creative
possibilities introduced in FPA.132.
Prerequisite: FPA.132
and written permission of the Department.
Students should expect to pay a laboratory fee.
3. Rationale for Proposed Changes for FPA.132 and FPA.133
There continues to be a long waiting list of students wishing to
enroll in FPA.132. Because of limited faculty, equipment and space
it is impossible to accommodate more than 1 section of from 25 to
35 students. Many serious students who have come to SFU specifically
to study film are unable to enroll in the course because of the
present first-come-first-serve system. Those who indicate a commit-
ment to film study or filmmaking should be considered above those

only wanting a brief experience in film.
This does not mean that the interdisciplinary student, for example
the theatre or music student who wants an introductory course in
film, will be denied entry. Over the academic year approximately
70 students are enrolled in 132 (there is a Fall and Summer course).
Of these 70 only 15 are let into FPA.230. This means that there
are 55 places in 132 for the student who wishes only to take the
course as an elective.
Interviews
Brief interviews would be held in September and May, by teaching
faculty in film. Students would be assessed on their knowledge of
film, and their commitment to film or related fields.
FPA.133 now becomes more than a continuation of FPA.132. The changed
description states the content of the course more exactly. Because
of its increased demand and specialization the prerequisite of FPA.132
should not allow for automatic enrollment in FPA.133. There will be
an increased use of technology in FPA.133 and only students who have
film faculty permission should be allowed to enroll.

CURRICULAR CHANGES
FPA.176-3
1.
Present Calendar
FPA.176-3 PHOTOGRAPHY AS AN ART FORM.
Introduction to photography as an art form. Basic camera techniques,
visual design and aesthetics will be explored. Laboratory fee for
materials will be required. (Seminar/Studio)
Prerequisite: FPA.132 or 160 or written permission of the Department.
Students with credit for CMNS 235 or 255 may not take
this course for further credit.

FPA.176-3 PHOTOGRAPHY AS AN ART FORM.
Introduction to photography as an art form. Basic camera techniques,
visual design and aesthetics will be explored. Laboratory fee for
materials will be required. (Seminar/Studio).
Prerequisite: FPA.132 or 160
and written permission of the Department.
Admission interviews must be arranged with the Depart-
ment.
Students with credit for CMNS 235 or 255 may not
take this course for further credit.
3. Rationale
The course has very limited access to essential equipment so that only
approximately ten students are allowed to enroll. There is tremendous
student demand for the course. As enrollment control is dictated by
circumstances the department is concerned that students who need this
course as a part of their studies in visual art or film or some other
programme have an opportunity to participate.
There will be a short portfolio interview with the instructor to
determine the student's background and educational interest.

CURRICULAR CHANGES
FPA. MAJOR
1. Present Calendar (as passed at Senate last June)
The Centre for the Arts offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major
in fine and performing arts. The fine and performing arts major
enables the student to pursue an individually planned and approved
program of study in the fine and performing arts which includes
substantial study of dance, film, theatre or visual art together
with courses in other art forms and interdisciplinary work. The
requirements, which include a sequence of studio courses in at
least one art form and critical study of several arts, are designed
to enlarge the student's experience and comprehension of the fine
and performing arts in the contemporary world.
At least 24 hours of credit in FPA. courses. These courses must
include the prerequisite credits for any one of the minor programs
within the Centre for the Arts.
Upper Division_Re(juirements
Students must complete 38 hours of upper division credit in approved
courses, distributed as follows:
i) At least 18 hours of credit must be obtained from among upper
, ?
division FPA. courses within one of the disciplines of dance,
film, theatre or visual art. These courses must include all
disciplinary requirements for one of the minor programs within
the Centre. Note that such courses may not count toward both
a minor program and a fine and performing arts major.
ii)At least 12 hours of credit must be obtained from among upper
division courses outside the discipline in which the student
chooses to concentrate his or her work. These may include seminar
or studio courses in another discipline or
interdisciplinary.
courses.
iii)At least 8 additional hours, as co-requisite credit, must be
obtained from courses approved as directly related to the
student's major program of study. These courses may be from
within or outside of the Centre for the Arts.
The approval of specific courses within the above guidelines will be
at the discretion of a departmental faculty advisor, who will act in
consultation with other faculty as appropriate. The intent of the
advisory system is to insure that each major undertakes a coherent
program of study in the fine and performing arts. Students are
responsible for obtaining prior approval of their programs in accord-
ance with departmental procedures.
In addition to these specific requirements, students' programs must
fulfill the following general requirements: 120 semester hours of
credit, 45 of which must be in upper division courses and 24 of
which must be completed in courses outside the Centre for the Arts.

3. Rationale for
It has always been our intention that the minor in contemporary music,
if and when approved, should count equally with the other minors
towards the FPA. major. This change is contingent upon final approval
of the minor in contemporary music.
Rationale for
(D
The additional words are to clarify the nature of this requirement.
That they are a clarification only and not a change of intention is
shown by reference to the last sentence of point (iii), which stipulates
that the 8 co-requisite hours may be from other departments.
