EXTENDED STUDIES DIPLOMA PROGWM - PUBLIC HISTORY
?

The Extended Studies Diploma Program offers those who already hold a
bachelor's degree an opportunity to develop and follow a program of indi-
vidualized study not usually provided by graduate or professional degrees.
The program responds to rapidly changing educational needs, where mid-
career advancement or changing career goals demand new knowledge and
skills; it also affirms the established values of general education, of
learning for its c'n sake.
The proposed Extended Studies Diploma in Public History is a special contin-
uing education program in historical study as it is practiced in non-academic
settings - in museums, archives, government agencies., cultural societies,
conservation authorities, businesses, families, and other public and private
institutions. The field is an established one in which strong traditions
in scholarly, professional, applied, and avocational activities flourish.
It is also one in which new academic programs for professional public
historians are being developed and where. employment opportunities look
promising.
In
this community, there is demonstrated interest in and need for public
history instruction. The three courses offered by We History Department
in heritage conservation, archives methods, and museums use, taught initially
on an experimental basis, have had substantial enrollments. The sumner
internship program organized in connection
with the courses has successfully
placed students with local institutions and individual researchers. Community-
based professionals welcomed the program and have participated in it with
enthusiasm.
Moreover, the
particular
history of the Canadian Pacific Northwest, its
context of rapid growth and development, presents a field rich in possibility
for the
public historian. The area has
a strong ethnographic and archaeological
tradition
on
which to build. But even the most casual research reveals the
limits of specialized study in other. areas. It is exciting to imagine, for
example, a history of BC's coal industry in the present context. The useful-
ness of professional histories of some of B.C.'s institutions, such as this
University, is self-evident. The program would encourage such projects.
As a course of study, the Extended Studies Diploma Program in Public History
offers students an opportunity not currently available elsewhere for ordered
and sequential study based academically in the University's established
undergraduate courses in Canadian and public history.. (Another comiunity
education option, the Certificate Program in Public History, is also available
for those who may not have a University degree.) It combines core courses
in history with optional ones in related disciplines, and it recognizes the
importance of applied skills by requiring appropriate work experience,
internship in the Public
History
Program,
or completion of a special project.
