Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
at its meeting of September 23, 1980 gives rise to the following motion:
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
Board of Governors, as set forth in S.80-116, the change in
lower division requirements in Mathematics for Major and
Honors students to require MATH 242-3 - Introduction to
Analysis.

The Department of Mathematics has approved a proposal to change the first
paragraph of
item #(1) of Lower Division Requirements - Majors and Honors in
Mathematics (see page 180 (and 413) of the 79-80 SFU calendar) to
"(1) MATH 151-3, 152-3, 232-3, 242-3, 251-3, 252-3, and either
3 additional hours in lower division Mathematics (MATH 100-3,
190-3 and 191-3 may not be included) or Computing Science
103-3 or computing Science 105-3. This requirement would
normally be met by the end of the fourth level."
The change here is to make Math 242-3, Introduction to Analysis, a mandatory
course for all majors and honors degrees in Mathematics and at the same time to
require 3 (instead of the present 6) additional hours in lower division Mathematics
or computing Science 103-3 or Computing Science 105-3.
It is felt that every major and honors graduate in Mathematics should be
required to demonstrate a standing, represented by the content of Math 242-3,
in the theorems and proofs of the theoretical side of calculus.
This proposal has been adopted by the Faculty of Science Undergraduate
Curriculum Committee. Would you please take the proposal before the Faculty
of Arts Undergraduate Curriculum Committee for its consideration and, I hope,
approval.
