The Wonder of Words
This course examines words, their structure and history. It is open to all
students interested in words.
Grades on based on quizzes.
There is no textbook, rather handouts will be supplied at cost.
Syllabus:
1.
Sounds and spellings of English, basic English phonetics, relation
between sounds and spelling.
2.
Principles of writing systems, orthography as a record of language
history.
3.
Genetic relationships of languages, principles of comparative philology.
4. Inflectional morphology, grammatical endings.
5.
Derivational morphology: the internal structure of words, prefixation,
suf fixation, roots. Latin and Greek roots and affixes in English.
6.
The historical development of languages; change in form.
7.
The historical development of languages: change in meaning, neologisms.
8.
Borrowings: changes undergone by words when borrowed. Examples from
English and other languages.
9.
Exercises illustrating relationships existing among English words.
