Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies 

at its meeting of 3 June 1980 gives rise to the following motion: 

MOTION 

That Senate approve and recommend approval to the 

Board of Governors that for the purposes of the 

program for a Bachelor of Arts with Honours or 

Major in Mathematics, Mathematics be considered a 

Group A department.

Heretofore students who wish a B.A. degree in Mathematics have not been able 

to count Mathematics towards the Faculty of Arts group requirements. All 

other students can count a maximum of nine hours of their major subject 

towards Group A or Group B requirements. As Mathematics counts as Arts for 

Honors, Major

students, it can not be used to satisfy Group C 

requirements. To rectify this inequity the Mathematics Department has 

requested:

The required calendar revisions are attached. In 

order to avoid confusion we do not propose to quote the entire regulation under 

the general section of the Faculty of Arts regulation; a reference will guide 

those concerned to the calendar entry for the B.A. program in Mathematics.

FROM: 1.1 Group Requirements 

Normally, the first 60 hours of a student's program comprise 

a period of exploratory and prerequisite study, contrasted to the 

final 60 hours which constitute the essence of the degree program. 

The Faculty of Arts Group Requirements outlined on pages 92 and 

94 are intended to provide a base for a liberal arts degree. 

Students are well advised to take these Group Requirements early 

in their programs. The Group Requirements mayinclude the lower 

division prerequisites for an Arts degree with a Major in Arts 

or a Double Major in Arts and Sciences. 

To assist in planning programs, the faculties and departments 

and/or divisions of Simon Fraser University have been divided into 

five groups.

Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology). 

Courses must be taken from at least two of these Depart- 

ments.

The Mathematics Department has approved a proposal to the effect

that the following statement be inserted in replacements of page 91 of the

79-80 SFU calendar (Group Requirements of the Faculty of Arts)

"For the purposes of the program for a B.A.

Mathematics, Mathematics may be considered to be. a

Group A department"

This refers to the general listing of Mathematics as a Group C department.

To take account of this change, slight editing will be necessary for Item

This recommendation arises from the fact that, as currently written,

the requirements for a B.A. in Mathematics, do no allow Mathematics

courses to contribute to Group A, B or C requirements of the Faculty of

Arts. In order to alleviate this situation the above proposal has been

brought forward and supported.
