Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies at its meeting of 3 June 1980 gives rise to the
following motion:
MOTION
That Senate approve and recommend approval to
the Board of Governors, as set forth in S80-86,
the proposed requirements for the Extended Studies
Diploma - Humanities.
Note -
At the time the requirements for an Extended Studies
?
Diploma were approved it was recognized that many students
would undertake individually approved programs and that
specific program requirements would be identified when it
was anticipated that such requirements would be appropriate
for a number of students. This is such a program. If it is
feasible to do so this program will be initiated in the Fall
semester 80-3.

I
Attached is a proposal for an Extended Studies Diploma in
the Humanities. On behalf of the Committee on the Humanities, I am
seeking its approval by. the F.A.C.C.
The proposal has been developed by the Committee on the
Humanities and the office of Continuing Studies. It incorporates in
its core requirements the courses from the regular Humanities Minor
which was approved by Senate in January 1980. It makes use of existing
courses and requires no special funding, faculty, or scheduling.
When the Extended Studies Diploma was originally approved,
it was intended to serve as a general framework within which specific
programs could be developed. To my knowledge, this is the first such
program in the Faculty of Arts. I would appreciate it if you would take
the necessary steps to place the proposal on an upcoming F.A.C.C.
agenda. As HUM. 302 is scheduled to be offered in. 80-3, it would be
useful to have the Diploma program approved as soon as possible so
that potential students could be informed of its existence and given
an opportunity to enrol in the Fall semester.

EXTENDED STUDIES DIPLOMA PROGRAM
IN THE HUMANITIES
The humanities are broadly understood to be the integrated
study of human creativity and culture. The humanities study
those aspects of human endeavour that characterize given cul-
tures or historical periods - Philosophy, Art, Literature, Re-
ligion, Politics - and a comparative approach to these aspects
is central. Through the study of civilization the humanities
raise critical questions about the complex body of feelings,
attitudes and ideas that define and express the human condition.
This program is presented with the belief that adults should
have the opportunity to explore these critical questions in a
• ?
university environment which will encourage them to rethink the
ways in which the past has fashioned the present and to redefine
their sensibility to literary and aesthetic achievements.
Special Features

level courses if appropriate
• part-time evening study to facilitate completion by students
with commitments to daytime employment
