Major Programs and Honours Progr4m
Action taken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
at its meeting of March 25, 1980, gives rise to the following
motion:
MOTION
That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
Board of Governors, as set forth in S.80-38, the
proposed Co-operative Education program in Chemistry
and related areas including new practicum courses
and minimum requirements to enrol and to continue
in Co-operative Education.
NOTE
The proposal to provide an opportunity for Co-operative Education
in Chemistry and related areas conforms to the general description
of Co-operative Education on page 448 of the-University Calendar.
The requirement of aminimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 for enrolling
and continuing in the Major Program, Co-operative Education, are
intended to ensure that a high academic standard is maintained
among students for whom the university seeks appropriate work
semester placements.
For the information of senators, the initial introduction of
Co-operative Education programs at the University of Victoria and
Simon Fraser involved a tentative and short-term agreement. on the
part of each university to postpone development of programs in
fields in which the other institution was attempting to get a
program established. Under this informal arrangement, SFU delayed
the development of Co-operative Education programs in such fields
as Chemistry and Physics. However, that agreement is no longer in
effect and the institutions are now attempting to maintain liaison
and co-ordination both at the level of the Directors of Co-operative
Education and at the level of the Academic Vice-Presidents.
Certainly the trimester system at our University is ideal for
Co-operative Education. The Lower Mainland provides a concentra-
tion of business and industry which is helpful for finding appro-
priate placement for students. In general, the extension of our
activities in this field appears very promising.

Preamble for the Calendar
Co-operative Education (Please note general description on page 448
of the Calendar)
Co-operative Education is a system which combines work experience with
academic studies. The student spends alternate semesters on campus and
in study related jobs.
A Major Program and an Honors Program leading to a B.Sc. degree, Co-operative
Education, and incorporating four work semesters are available to qualified
students in Chemistry and related areas. The work practicum requirements
are the University courses CHEM 306, 307, 406, 407.
Students wishing to enrol in the Co-operative Education program must apply
at least three months prior to the start of the semester in which they wish
to enrol in CHEM 306. Intending Co-op students should seek advising from
the Department as early in their university careers as possible.
Students must obtain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 in order to enrol
and to continue in the Major Program, Co-operative Education. The higher
averages normally required for entry to and continuance in an Honors Program
apply to those taking an Honors Program, Co-operative Education.
A note in the Calendar under the Biochemistry, Chemical Physics and any
other chemistry related area should appear as follows:
Co-operative Education
Co-operative Education is a system which combines work experience with
academic studies. The student spends alternate semesters on campus and
in study related jobs.
Students interested in Co-operative Education should refer to the Chemistry
section of the Calendar dealing with Co-operative Education.
