Senate Committee on Continuing Studies
• REPORT ON UNDERGRADUATE
EXTENSION CREDIT COURSES
May 1, 1978 - April 30, 1979
,.This report describes the undergraduate extension credit course offer-
ings and associated course enrollee figures of the Departments/Faculties
of the University for the period May, 1978 through April 30, 1979. By way
of definition, extension credit courses include those that are offered on-
campus after 4:30 p.m. of the regular semesters or during the days or evenings
of Intersession (May-June) or Summer Session (July-August); those that arc-
offered off-campus in a classroom; and those that are available through print
or print and audio tapes - i.e., directed independent study (correspondence)
courses.
A summary of the numbers of extension credit course offerings and the
numbers of course enrollees for each type of extension course is presented
in Table 1. A total of 16,131 course enrollees was recorded in 513 extension
credit course offerings, about 7% more than for the same period of 1977-78.
The number of enrollees in these courses represented about 24% of the total
number of undergraduate enrollees at the University for the 1978-79 period.
I ?
On-Campus Undergraduate Extension Credit Programs
A summary of the number of courses and course enrollees by Faculty for
each of the three semesters of 1978-79 and for 1977-78 is presented in Table
2. The overall 8% increase in number of course enrollees from 1978-79
relative to 1977-78 resulted from increases in Fall and Spring Semester
evening course enrollees in all Faculties. The number of course enrollees

- ?
-2-
was down about 4% during the Summer Semester programing periods of 1978-79
relative to 1977-78, due to the decrease in enrollees in Education courses
during Intersession and Summer Session.
ii Off-Campus Undergraduate Credit Programs
A summary of the number of off-campus courses and course enrollees by
program, is presented in Table 3. The small decrease in course enrollees is
primarily attributable to a decrease in the size of the Kelowna Program from
11 and 12 courses in the Fall and Spring Semesters, respectively, in 1977-78
to 5 courses per Fall and Spring Semester in 1978-79. The number of courses
was reduced as a result of the completion of the 3-year commitment to the
degree completion program in Biological Sciences and the conclusion of the
one-year special funding provided by Universities Council for two Geography
courses per Fall and Spring Semester.
III Directed Independent Study Courses
Fifteen different courses were available in this instructional mode
during 1978-79, two more than during 1977-78. Most of the courses were
available during two or three of the three semesters of the reporting period
-
?
(courses are sometimes not available due to being "under revision" or be-
cause the course authOr/marker is on leave). Eleven courses were offered
during the Summer Semester 1978, 14 during the Fall Semester, and 12 during
the Spring Semester, 1979. Course enrollees numbered 236, 215, and 255,
respectively. Overall, the number of course enrollees was up slightly (2.6%)
relative to the same period of 1977-78.

-3-
IV Special Audit Students
The number of persons attending classes, day or evening, on-' or off-
campus, as special audit students was 158 for 1978-79. The number of
such students during 1977-78 was 152.
