The Faculty Graduate Studies Committee requests that,
in accordance with Graduate Regulation 5.2, Educ. 840 (0)
Graduate Seminar be graded on anS/U basis.
The reasons for this request are
1) Educ. 840 (0) is designed as a continuing seminar
for full-time graduate students.
ii) There are no mandatory course requirements aside from
regular attendance
and participation in seminars.

In the recent meeting of the Executive Committee of Senate
Graduate Studies, Ms. Marian McGinn asked me to write you an
memorandum explaining the nature and purpose of Education 840-0.
At the time that Education .840 was proposed as a graduate level
course in Education the intention was to create an opportunity
for full-time day graduate students to come together on a regular
basis in an ongoing graduate level seminar. Because Education 841
carries three credits, and because a graduate student may take
Education 841 only once
for
credit the idea of Education 840 was
simply to make it possible for a student to continue to register
in the graduate seminar--take it once as Education 841 and get three
credits--and subsequently register for Education 840 for no credits
but still have it recorded on his or her transcript that participation
in the graduate seminar was continuing. This seemed, at that time,
to be desirable as a means of providing a continuing forum for graduate
student involvement in the seminar.
