CHANGE OF COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR HONORS
FROM: Archaeology Majors who wish admission to the Honors
program must hold a 3.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average
and to remain in the program must maintain that
average. Also necessary are: the successful
completion of the Honors Reading and Honors Essay
Archaeology courses, and 10 credit hours in other,
courses approved in advance, over and above the
requirements for a Major. In addition, the following
is required: successful completion of ARC. 376, or
.MATH 101, or CMPT 1O3 and 105, or PSYC 210, or a
statistics course approved by the Department.

Honors requirement is less stringent than the
Majors requirements.

A couple of problems have arisen because of the wording
used in our degree requirements (pp. 98 and 99 of the Under-
graduate Studies Calendar). These need to be corrected.
Pg. 98 - second paragraph, first line, states: "Arc 223,
333, 335, and 480 may be substituted for any of the above
group courses upon the written consent of the Department prior
to registration."
My concern here is for substitutions for Group 1 courses.
It my my understanding that our Group 1 courses were those-we
considered 'core' courses and felt that all students should
have. In fact, three paragraphs later, we state exactly, that
(for majors). Group 11 are "technically-oriented" courses,and
Group III are areal and topical courses. Thus, while 333,335
and 480 (Special Topics and Directed Studies courses) could
conceivably be properly substituted for Group 1 courses (if the
content suggests a suitable substitution), Arc. 223 (Prehistory
• ?
of Canada) is basically an area course (Group III) and probably
should not be substituted for Groups I and II. Confusion and
a lack of clarity about what may be substituted for what is
creating difficulty for Ingrid in advising students.
I propose that
following:

requirements without taking Arc. 376 (i.e. by taking Math 101

to Arc. 376) and Arc. 376, this implies that the Honors requirement
is less stringent than the Majors requirement. I/This final sentence
also conflicts with the preceeding sentence, which states that Honors
students are required to complete:
"...lO credit hours in courses approved in advance,
over and above the reauirements for a Major."
(emphasis added).
I propose that we drop the final sentence under "Course Re-
quirements for Honors".
