PROPOSED LISTING OF SOME MATH AND
Subject...SOME..CtPX.C.OURSE.A.MACM
(DEPTS. OF CMPT, MATH )
Date. . ... .December.
.17.,.1.98J
..........................
Action undertaken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
at its meeting of December 1, 1981 gives rise to the following motion:-
MOTION:
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the Board of
Governors, as set forth in
S.82-5,
the proposed listing
of five Mathematics courses and one Computing Science course
as follows:
MATH
216 -.
Introduction to Computational Methods is to be
redesignated MACM
216
MATH
306 -
Introduction to Automata Theory is to be
redesignated MACM
306
MATH.
316 -
Numerical Analysis I is to be redesignated
MACM
316
MATH
1
401 - Switching Theory and Logical Design is to
be redesignatedMACM
401
MATH
402 -
Automata and Formal Languages is to be
redesignated MACM
402
CMPT
360 -
Computation for Statistical Data Processing
is to be redesignated MACM
360."
It was noted that the proposal was supported by the Department of
Mathematics and now had the approval of both the Faculty of Inter-
disciplinary Studies and the Faculty of Science.
It was observed that normally designations refer to a particular
discipline, department, or program but in this instance none of those
conditions would be fulfilled.
It is noted that if this change is made it will be necessary
to appropriately editorialize a number of items which have gone forward
from earlier meetings but from which this specific topic was removed.
It is stated that a number of Mathematics courses are being used
as Computing courses and that at a number of other institutions they
would be so labelled. There is concern that a number of courses would
be seen as Mathematics and not.as
Computing and that this could be a
serious disadvantage to the student. The Department feels strongly that
adjustment is required.

for approval of joint listing of certain courses heretofore offered by their
departments with initials MATH or CMPT, as follows:
MATH 216 - Introduction to Computational
rthods
is 'to be replaced by MACN 216
MATH 306 - Introduction to Automata Theory'
is to be replaced by MACN 306
MATH 316 - Numerical Analysis I

These courses should be listed in both the Mathematics and the
Computing Science sections of the calendar, just as NUSC (Nuclear Science)
courses are listed in Chemistry and Physics sections.
Each of these courses is to have the department to which it now belongs
as its home department, assuming primary responsibility for maintaining it.
Any future changes in any 'of these courses are to be subject to 'the approval
of both departments. Scheduling of these courses for each semester is to be
agreed upon by the department chairmen or departmental assistants.

COMPUTING SCIENCE COURSES
The Mathematics and Computing. Science departments have now agreed to ask for
approval of joint listing of certain courses heretofore offered by their
departments with initials 'MATH or Q4PT as follows:
MATH 216 - Introduction to Computational Methods
is to be replaced 'by.
MACH 216
MATH 306 -
introduction to Automata Theory
is to be replaced. by
MACH 306
• MATH 316 - Numerical Analysis I
is to be replaced
by MACH 316
MATH 401 - Switching Theory and Logical Design
is to be replaced by
MACH 401
MATH 402 - Automata and Formal Languages
?
is to be replaced by MACH 402
MPT 360 - Computation for Statistical Data Processing
• ?
is to be replaced by MACH
360
These courses should be listed in both the Mathematics and the
.
Computing Science
sections of the calendar, just as QfPT 103 and CMPT 105 are now listed in both
sections.
Each of these courses is to have the department to which it now belongs as its
home department, assuming primary responsibility for maintaining it. Any
future changes in any of these courses are to be subject to the approval of
both departments. Scheduling of these courses for each semester is to be agreed
upon by thc'department chairmen or departmental assistants.
All of these courses, including MACH
360,
are to be treated by the Mathematics
Department as mathematics courses, for the purpose of satisfying any mathematics
degree requirements. Others who may be interested, in whether a course is a
math.matics course or not (e.g. the Faculty of Arts, when determining whether
their distribution requirements are met) will have, to make their own rules but
we would hope it is realized that relabelling a course MACH instead of MATH
doesn't change the nature of the course.
