Action undertaken by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies at its meeting of December 8, 1981, gives rise to the following
motion:
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
Board of Governors, as set forth In
S.82-If
that the
following be added as a lower level requirement for
all students who declare an intent to enter a minor,
major or honors program in Computing Science:
Completion of one of ENGL 101, 102, 103, or 104, or
PHIL 001 with a grade of C- or better, normally
within the first 30 hours of work at SFU. This
requirement must be completed before formally
declaring a minor, major or honors."

Prior to the placement of this item on the agenda of SCUS for
debate, it was required that the Faculties of Arts and of Interdisciplinary
Studies and the Departments of Computing Science and of English hold some
discussions to clarify the nature of need, the intent of proposed regula-
tions, and the impacts. A number of meetings were held with some compromise
being achieved prior to debate at SCUS on December 8. SCUS approved motion
as above and also approved motion that the English and Computing Science
Departments be encouraged to consult further and the English Department be
requested to develop a course to better meet the needs of Computing Science
students.
It was suggested that as the intent is to provide annually for
some 150 major and honors students in Computing Science that at the lower
levels the number requiring servicing would be some 300 - some already are
undertaking such work.
It was recognized that the Department of English might be faced with
a responsibility for resolving communication skills problems of students in
other departments if similar actions were initiated elsewhere.
Proposals had been made earlier requiringa 100 division English
course as prerequisite for CMPT 201 and for CMPT 260, but following discus-
sion those proposals were withdrawn.

At this time SCUS has before it a proposal from Computing Science
which would have the effect of:
1. Making a 100 level English course a requirement for
all majors, honors and minors in Computing Science.
2.
Making a 100 level English course a prerequisite for
CMPT 201 and 260.
As a result of discussion with representatives of the Department of English
and the Faculty of Arts I intend to move the following amendment.
1.
That the following be added as a lower level requirement
for all students who declare an intent to enter a minor,
major or honors program in Computing Science: Completion
of one of ENGL 101, 102, 103 or 104 or PHIL 001 with a
grade of C- or better, normally within the first 30 hours
of work at SFU. This requirement must be completed before
formally declaring a minor, major or honors.
2. That the English and Computing Science Departments be
encouraged to consult and that the English Department
is requested to develop a course to better meet the needs
of Computing Science students."
