Senate Committee on Continuing Studies
REPORT ON
UNDERGRADUATE EXTENSION CREDIT COURSES?
May 1, 1983 - April 30, 1984
This report describes the numbers of undergraduate extension
credit course offerings and associated course enrollee figures of
theDe.partmentsEacu1tLesof the university for the period May 1, 1983
through April 30, 1984. By way of definition, extension credit courses
include those that are offered after 4:30 p.m. of the regular semesters
or during the days or evenings of Intersession (May-June) or Summer
Session (July-August), those that are offered in downtown Vancouver
• ?
(day or evening), those that are offered off-campus in a classroom
(e.g., atKelowna, Prince George), and those that are available
throughout the province via print or print and audio tapes - i.e., the
Directed Independent Study (correspondence) Course Program.
A summary of the numbers of extension credit course offerings
and the numbers of course enrollees for each type of extension
course is presented in Table 1. A total of 22,594 course enrollees
was recorded in 640 extension credit course offerings during 1983-84,
3.9% (855) more enrollees than for the same period of 1982-83. The
number of enrollees represented 26.7% of the total number of under-
graduate enrollees at the university during 1983-84 (84,526).

I On-campus and Downtown Undergraduate Extension Credit Programs
A summary of the numbers of courses and course enrollees for
each location (on-campus, downtown) by each Faculty for each of
the three semesters of 1983-84 and 1982-83 is presented in Table 2.
The number of enrollees was down marginally (-2.1%) during 1983-84
relative to 1982-83 as was the number of course offerings (-5.0%,
498 vs 524 courses).
In terms of location, the number of course enrollees in the
on-campus program was down slightly (0.9%, 15,616 vs 15,765).
By Faculty, Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies showed an increase
(3.3% and 9.4%, respectively) whereas Business Administration,
Education, and Science were down (-18.6%, -5.4%, and -2.8%,
?
S
respectively). The decrease in enrollees in Business Administration
appears to be due to a drop in course offerings (51 vs 67 in 1982-83)
and the effect of raised admission and continuance GPA's for that
program. Total enrollment In the Downtown Program was down 10.0%
(2,007 vs 2,231). This effect appears to be attributable to four
fewer course offerings and, as with the on-campus program, a decrease
in the number of course enrollees in Business Administration.
II Off-campus Undergraduate Credit Programs
A summary of the number of off-campus lecture and seminar
courses and enrollees in such courses is presented, by program,
in Table 3. The number of course enrollees decreased by 8.0%,
due to the fact that the Spring Semester, 1982, represented the

thi3

conclusion of Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies course offerings
at Kelowna.
III Directed Independent Study Courses
Forty-one different undergraduate courses were available in
this instructional mode during 1983-84. The total number of
offeringso_f these courses was 106, seven more than in 1982-83.
The total number of course enrollees was 4,484, an increase of
39.5% relative to 1982-83.
IV Special Audit Students
The number of people attending classes, day or evening,
on- or off-campus, as special audit students during 1983-84 was
157, a decrease of 27 (14.7%) over 1982-83.
