listing of B.C. Universities/
Regulations apply
.
For many years there have been special regulations authorizing a
larger total than normal of transfer credit/course challenge hours toward the
BGS degree provided the work is taken in British Columbia through one or more
of Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, the University
of Victoria.
?
These regulations were approved prior to the establishment in
the province of the Open Learning Institute.
Approval has been given for some time by SUAB of transfer credit for
certain OLI courses, but the ancillary regulations regarding the BGS degree
have not been updated. The Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies was requested
some time ago by SCUS to give consideration to the regulations and now has brought
forth its recommendation. The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies has
concurred with the recommendation and the item is transmitted to SUAB.
MOTION:
"That SUAB approve the proposed revision to the BGS regulations
to accept transferable work from the Open Learning Institute
of British Columbia in the same manner as transferable work
taken at the University of British Columbia and the University
of Victoria, by adding the Open Learning Institute to the
three now included in the regulations - University of British
Columbia, University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University."

taken at Simon Fraser University.
The following explanatory notes and intent for the B.G.S. purposes are
included: ?

?
.
(1)
The B.G.S:degree requires completion of 120 semester hours of
credit. It must include 45 hours of upper division courses - i.e. SFU
courses numbered 300 and/or 400 - but without stipulation as to
the level in which these courses are taken.
(2)
Transfer credit courses and course challenges are not normally
Included in the calculation of averages. For the above purposes,
however, with the possibility of 90 hours of transfer work.'SFU must
be satisfied that the priniciple of an average of at least 2.0 is clearly
fulfilled, and transfer grades will be reviewed to ensure this. .
The general regulation limiting the amount of transfer credit permit-
ted after the first registration at SFU, to 30 semester hours will not
apply to work 'taken at the University of British Columbia or'the
University of Victoria.
The requirement of grades of C or higher for recognition of transfer
work taken after first registration at SFU will not directly apply to
work taken at the University of British Columbia or the University of
Victoria.

"Appropriate" courses refer to courses which normally could be cre-
dited in Arts and Sciences. It will exclude, for example, courses con-
sidered generally equivalent to EDUC 401/402 or others covering
basic teacher education, or other professiona? areas.
Requirements for admission to SEU remain unchanged.
A student undertaking work elsewhere for transfer to SFU, whose
overall record does not fulfil the normal principles for continua'nce,
may be placed on
not
WARNING, or ACADEMIC PROBA-
TION, or REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW status.
The University reserves the right to deny transfer credit or to require
completion of further courses beyond the minimum hours for the
degree, when it is judged that there is a significant content overlap in
courses taken.
(NOTE: The principle -pertains that courses used for credit on another
degree or diploma awarded by another university may not be
used for credit towards the B.G.S. degree also.)
Students who have completed at least 90 semester hours credit, including
30 upper division hours, at Simon Fraser and are accepted into an accredited
professional program in law, medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine are
eligible to receive a Bachelor of General Studies degree from Simon Fraser.
University after successful completion of the first year of professional study.
To be acceptable, the courses taken in the professional program must not
duplicate courses
,
already taken at SFU and must be acceptable for transfer
credit. Candidates must apply for transfer credit and for receipt of the
Bachelor's degree through the Registrar's Office, Simon Fraser University.
Since official transcripts of the work completed in the first year of the profes-
sional program are required for transfer credit purposes, application for gra-
duation should be delayed until the summer semester following the comple-
tion of requirements.
