RE: 1985 IMPLEMENTATION DATE FOR A
LANGUAGE 11 AND A SCIENCE 11
SUAB1O3 -

DATE: 15TH FEBRUARY
.
,. 1983
In December, 1982, Senate passed a motion that will
require B.C. Grade XII applicants to include a Language
11 and a Science 11 in tneir secondary school programs.
The following is the motion:--
"That for admission from B.C. Grade XII
the requirement of a Language 11 OR
a Science 11 be revised to; a Language
11 AND a Science 11. That this revision
be implemented for applicants to the
?
1985 Fall Semester and subsequently."
The implementation date for this requirement is effective
for admission to the 1985 Fall Semester. This date was
selected on the basis of discussions, with some secondary
school counsellors and on the understanding that the
Beginners Language option would allow current Grade IX
and X students to fulfill the requirement.
Subsequent to our notice informing schools of this change,
I have received numerous calls and letters expressing
concern about the implementation date of 1985. Apparent-
ly, the junior/senior secondary counsellors (ie: those
advising Grade IX and X students) have advised many
students that a language would not be necessary for them
to gain admission to SFU, or the University of Victoria,
upon graduation from secondary school in 1985 and 1986.
Also, it is apparent that many schools do not offer a
Beginners Language 11. Some of the schools that presently
offer Beginners Language 11 have advised that such courses
are being dropped as a result of low enrolments and budget
cutbacks.

As a result of the foregoing information, itis
recommended that the Senate Undergraduate
Admissions Board approve and recommend to Senate
that the date of implementation be 'revised to:--
"That this revision be applicable for
applicants graduating in 1987 and
subsequently."
