CHANGE IN CREDIT HOURS FROM FIVE TO 

HISTORIES: TELLING THE TRUTH ABOUT 

EXPERIENCE II - VECTOR 2-0-2. 

Acting under delegated authority at its meeting of March 8, 1983, 

the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies approved change in credit 

hours from 5 to 4 for G.S. 402 - Myths, Fictions, Histories: Telling the 

Truth About Experience II. 

(G.S. 403-5 already has been dropped). 

The Initial proposal to offer G.S. 402 and G.S. 403 as a 10 credit 

sequence of courses was based on shakey assumptions and hopes. It 

was designed for students with a degree of methodological sophistication 

and a strong Interest in the philosophy of their subject, whether 

history, physics, anthropology, or whatever, and also a substantial 

background of upper division study in a particular subject. While such 

students obviously exist in fair numbers, very few of them then have 

the ability to accommodate 10 elective credits in G.S. in their degree 

programs. Some of the students who do have that freedom, particularly 

G.S. students, do not have the substantial background in a particular 

academic subject, to which the abstract theory which forms the main 

content of the course needs to be tied. 

What I propose via the attached form is reducing Q.S. 402 to a 4 

credit course and dropping G.S. 403 altogether. The course will 

become rather more expository than its initial conception as a seminar 

anticipated. I hope therby to make it both more useful to those students 

who have a rather less strong academic background and more accessible 

to those who do have such a background; and to organize its content 

such that the benefits of the rigorous treatment of the range of abstract 

Ideas may be attained by all to an acceptable degree.
