its meeting of March 8, 1983, gives rise to the following motion:-
MOTION: "That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
Board of Governors, as set forth in S.83-34
the proposed new course HIST 338-3 - World War II."

Subject to approval of the course by Senate and the
Board of Governors, SCUS approved waiver of the two
semester time lag requirement in order that the course
may be first offered in Fall 83-3.

HISTORY 338: WORLD WAR II
This course,
which is based on the Thames Television series
?
"The World
at War",
is designed
as an introduction to the history of the origins and course
of the
Second World
War.
Particular attention
will be paid to the main campaigns of the war in
Europe
and Asia, and
to the domestic history of the belligerent powers.
?
The
social,
economic and
political consequences of the war will also be discussed
as well
as the moral
issues of genocide and the use of the atomic bomb.
The topics to
be discussed in the 13 weeks of the semester are as follows:
1.
The rise of Hitler and the origins of the war.
2.
The campaigns in Poland and Scandinavia. Churchill becomes Prime Minister.
3.
The fall of France. Dunkirk. The Battle of Britain. Yugoslavia, Greece
and Crete.
4.
Barbarossa. Pearl Harbour. The beginnings of the war in Asia.
5.
U.S. strategy. "Europe First". The desert war. El Alamein, Operation TORCH.
6.
Stalingrad. Russia at war. The naval war. The bomber offensive on Germany.
7.
The campaign in Italy. The "Big Three". The war in Asia.
8.
Inside the Reich. The Blitz. Britain at war.
9.
D Day. Life in German occupied Europe.
10.
Russia advances from the East, the Allies from the West. Strains on the
alliance. Genocide.
11.
The Russians take Berlin. Japan at war.
12.
"Island hopping" in the Pacific. The atomic bomb.
13.
The aftermath of war and the origins of the Cold War.
You will be provided with a study guide to the 26 hour-long espisodes of
film as well as book of additional reading material, the text book is:
Peter Calvocoressi and Guy Wint, "Total War."
You will be required to write three assignments during the course of the
semester, and there will be a final examination.
