Continuance, Withdrawal and
Readmission (Jan. & Oct.) -
Review periods shortened. ?
Academic-Warning/Academic Probation
clarified.
Admission from Independent B.C. Secondary Schools (Jan, May & July)-
Initial proposal was to admit only from Group II schools and grant
waivers in other cases. Policy modified to include all schools on
B.C. curriculum. Independent school students in other Canadian
provinces must be eligible for entry to the leading universities
in
the home province.
Introduction of ESL program (Jan, Feb, May, July & Oct.) -
Developed and implemented in 1983 in cooperation with Douglas
College.
B.C. Grade 11 requirements: Language 11 and Science 11 (Feb.) -
Implementation date changed from 1985 to 1987.

B.G.S. Transfer Credit (May) -
Open Learning Institute credit can be used as part of 90 semester
hours transfer credit, as for U.S.C., U.Vic.
Transfer Credit - Coguitlam College (Oct.) -
New independent college granted transfer credit for some courses
for trial period.
Early Entry and Early Admission (Dec.) -
Early Admission (entry in January of students Grade 12 year)
abolished. Early Entry to continue for exceptional students
only (From Grade 11).
Independent B.C. Secondary Schools (Dec.) -
Students from independent B.C. secondary schools will be expected
to write provincial exams.
The following actions did not require further approval by Senate:--
Locally-Developed Language 11 Course (May) -
L.D. Italian 11 was accepted from a Vancouver school.
End-of-Semester Review Procedures
Agreed to not review Probation and Warning transcripts, only in
categories involving withdrawal.
International Student Quota for 1983-84 (July & Oct.) -
Specific numbers were agreed upon for each of 83-3, 84-1 and 84-2,
based on anticipated numbers of new students in those semesters.
The figures were reviewed after the experience of the first,
semester.
Appeal Procedure - Limited Entry Programs (Oct.) -
Appeals will go to the Faculty or Department rather than to S.A.B.
Other topics dismissed - no action taken:--
Mature Students and EnrolmentLirnitations (Feb.) -
In view of possible enrolment limitations, including raising the
admission average for college transfer students, mature student

entry requirements were discussed.
B.C. Grade 12 Visual & Performing Arts Courses (May, July, Oct. & Dec.)-
These courses do not count in admission average at present. SUAB
voted to include these courses, then reversed this decision. The
matter is still under review.
Beginners' Language 11 (May) -
This is still accepted for admission and will satisfy the 1987
Language and Science 11 requirements. Discussions took place on
whether this one-year language course should still be accepted when
regular language 11 courses require study to begin in Grade 8 or 9.
Provincial Examinations (Oct.) -
The impact of examinations on admissions process was discussed.
Mature Student Entry - CRIM Certificate Programs (Dec.) -
Decision on expanding the Mature category to include out-of-=
students was deferred pending a review of this category of
admission.
End-of Semester Review meetings:
These meetings reviewed the outcomes of evaluation of academic
standing of students at the end of semesters 83-1, 83-2 and 83-3.
