Action undertaken by the Senate Graduate Studies Committee 

at its meeting of June 

gives rise to the following motion:- 

MOTION: 

"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the Board 

of Governors, as set forth in 

the following 

change in the General Regulations for Graduate Studies 

as 1.9.1 (d): 'In those examinations in which an External 

Examiner is included, the External Examiner shall have

at a Master's degree examination" 

qualifications at a level appropriate to full participation 

RATIONALE: 

Problems have been experienced in which people proposed as 

External Examiners did not have academic credentials suitable 

to the task of examining research at a Master's level. Existing 

regulations are silent upon the issue, perhaps because an External 

Examiner is not required in the Master's Examination and in many 

cases is not used. Because of the lack of information In the 

regulations, situations have arisen which have been identified as 

problems. This sentence may help prevent these In the future.
