Date ....... February ....984
The Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies fran time to time approve the
offering of a Short Course (1 week duration) in a specialized field and the
cost of these occasional Short Courses is shared by the Western Canadian
Universities.
Please find attached the terms of reference of these Short Courses, and note
in particular the following points:
(i)
the courses are taught by a collaboration of specialists
on faculty of western universities,
(ii)
the courses are at the graduate level in specialized fields
associated with an excellent group of faculty and special
facilities,
(iii)
there is formal evaluation of the course.
This
semester, faculty members f ran four western universities are collaborating
to give a Short Course on the "Reproduction and Development of Marine
. ?
Invertebrates" at Bamfield Marine Station (see attached sheet).
This
provides
a timely example of the type of course that may occur. The Department of
Biological Sciences has requested one semester hour of credit for this course.
In view of the quality control determining the nature of these courses, and
the intensity and level of instruction, the amount of one semester hour
credit is being formally requested. Whether or not such credit is allowed as
part of the core requirement for the student's graduate degree depends on the
recaiirendation of the student's Supervisory Carimittee.
Mo'ria
"That the specialist Short Courses sponsored by the Western
Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies carry one semester hour
of credit."
I am advised by the Registrar's Office that an appropriate course number
would be WCDC 500.

GUIDELINES FOR SHO1T (XXJPSES
Sponsored by the
Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies
1.
Graduate Summer short courses sponsored by the Western Canadian
Deans of Graduate Studies are designed to encourage collaboration in
training students at the graduate level by the offering of short
courses that give students an exposure to specialized fields of
knowledge in which one of the universities may have particular strength.
The courses should not be staff workshops or seminars but rather
should have a strong element of specialized training. Each course
should be based on a major specialized library holding, regional
facility or nationally or internationally recognized excellence of sane
group in the host university.
The cost of the courses is shared by the Western Canadian. Universities
who provide funds on the basis of a "tax" of one dollar per full-tine
graduate student, which is assessed annually.
2.
The courses are open only to full-tine students.
The courses are ordinarily of one week's duration. If the number of
applicants exceeds the number that can be acccmnodated, the home
university should decide who will be admitted giving priority to
visiting students, 'and attention to achieving a representative mix.
Where the number of applicants f ran any one university exceeds what
seems a reasonable quota, the decision as to which students will go
will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies of that university.
3.
Courses that are proposed should be approved by the university
proposing and submitted to the Western Deans through their Dean of Graduate
Studies. A course outline and budget should be included.
4.
The deadline for submitting proposals is February 15 to enable
consultation by the Deans at their annual meeting where a decision will
be made as to which courses are to be 'offered.
5.
The host university should canvass all other universities no later than
March 15, doing so through the Deans of Graduate Studies who will then
solicit naninations of students for the course.
6.
When the course has been completed, the host university should prepare
a course evaluation for distribution to the other universities.
7.
Details of the budgetary mechanisms for operating these courses can
be obtained from the Dean of Graduate Studies Office.
