SENATE COMMITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES
From....................................
JANUARY 20, 1984
Date
......................................................
In 1973 Senate approved Paper S.73-125 which provided that any course
not offered within a six semester period be deleted from the Calendar unless
adequate justification for retaining the course is presented, with the Senate
Committee on Undergraduate Studies charged with reviewing course offerings under
this ruling and making appropriate recommendations to Senate.
Departments were informed by the Registrar of the courses requiring
review, Deans of Faculties and Chairmen of Faculty Curriculum Committees were
provided with the same information. Departments were requested to respond to
the notice of intention to delete with the responses to be provided to the
Secretary of SCUS and copies to the Faculty Deans.
At its meeting of January 17, 1984 the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies reviewed responses.
?
In many instances there was agreement by the
Department concerned that courses be deleted; in some instances the committee
was satisfied that there was adequate justification for retaining some courses;
.
?
in some instances the committee did not accept that there was justification for
retention and recommends deletion.
Some courses were accepted for retention at the present time whilst
consideration is being given program review, with expectation that a number of
those courses will be replaced or discontinued. Notations will be made in Calendar
to ensure that students are not mislead about some courses as to potential frequency
of offering.
The motion below contains those courses where the Department has requested
deletion, some courses where the Department requested retention and motion for
retention was made at the committee but it was not considered that the justification
was adequate and the motion failed.
?
In one case there was insufficient justification
to warrant motion to retain. In two cases the Department concurred with deletion
but other affected parties sought retention not supported by the committee.

of courses were deleted

This change involved the
deletion of a 3rd year
methods course and its
replacement by a new
second year course.
The intention was to
provide for a 'better'
introduction to the
discipline and to allow
for subsequent senior
level exploration of
methodological concerns.
The
lower level course
has now been offered, and
the intention is that thi;

While
it has not been
scheduled specifically
it is the desire of the
department that this
