New Course Proposal (g1i.h..P.9.9)..
?
Date.........

- ca . V6ndir Description 204
Kindly put the enclosed course proposals on the agenda for the next Faculty
of Arts Curriculum Committee.
The change in the calendar description for English 204 is necessary in order
to clarify the range of material considered in the course. The present
description does not make it clear that material from the Anglo-Saxon period
is considered in the course.
English 099 is a new course designed to provide students throughout the
University with the opportunity to improve their writing, reading and critical
capabilities. University writing is understood to include a wide range of
skills: sentence structure, summary, definition, description, patterns of
coherence and the selection and organization of information. Since the course
is intended for all university students, reading materials will be drawn from
a variety of sources and disciplines. In order to ensure its success, the
course will be a seminar/workshop and will have an enrolment of no more than
17 students. Approximately 8-10 sections of the course will be given in the
fall and spring and 2-4 in summer.
Grading: The course will be graded and will, of course, count toward the
degree. However, 099 will not count toward the lower level requirements
for the English Degree.
The Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee will have to consider whether or not
English 099 can fulfill Group A requirements. In the opinion of the Department
of English it would not be appropriate for English 099 to be used as a Group
A course. However, since the whole question of group requirements will soon
be reviewed, the Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee may wish to defer this
decision until the time of a general review.

SAMPLE COURSE OUTLINE
ENGL
099-2 UNIVERSITY WRITING
Students in this course will read and analyze examples of the kinds of
prose they encounter in their university studies, and will practise
writing the kinds of prose that will be required from them in their
assignments.
Readings have been selected from a variety of disciplines and will be
examined in such a way as to reveal their logical structure and focus,
and their mode of development: particular attention will be paid to the
roles of generalization, detail, abstraction and concrete reference in
establishing coherence in information and argument. Students will also
consider the matter of expository style, at both sentence-level and text-
level. In their own writings, students will practise elements which
comprise expository expression: summary, illustration, definition,
description. Writing assignments will be directly related to reading
assignments, and designed to exercise students' comprehension and their
ability to put their reading to use, in their own thinking.
Course Outline
I.
Levels of generalization in prose. The reader/writer relationship
in expository prose. Note-taking.
II.
Summarizing.
III.
Inductive Reasoning and Paragraph Development (e.g. giving reasons
and examples).
IV.
Deductive Reasoning (e.g. citing authority and making inferences).
V.
Basic Patterns of Development (e.g. comparison/contrast, definition,
logical progression, etc.).
VI.
Research: Aims and Techniques.
Particular issues of punctuation, grammar and usage will be taken up as
students' writing indicates a need for clarification and investigation.
Required Texts:
Bell and Corbett ?
The Little English Handbook for Canadians
Norton Anthology of Essays or a similar collection of
expository writings.
Course Requirements:
In-class summaries of reading material (10%); Six short writing assignments
(approx. 500 words) which will demonstrate both reading and writing abilities
(40%); One longer critical paper (7-10 pages) (50%).
