Action undertaken by the Senate Graduate Studies Committee, at its
Meeting of November 10, 1986, gives rise to the following motion:
MOTION: "That Senate approve and recommend approval to the Board of
Governors, as set forth in
S.86-86 ,
the proposed changes
in the Department of Psychology:
Delete: M.A. Program in Clinical Psychology
Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology
Add:
?
Program in Clinical Psychology
.
?
The Ph.D. program in clinical psychology is accredited by
the Canadian Psychological Association and the American
Psychological Association. It is based upon a scientific-
professional model of clinical training.
Admission
All applicants are required to submit scores on the Graduate
Record Examination (verbal, quantitative, analytical, advanced
psychology sections), official transcripts, three letters of
academic reference and a statement of purpose. Top ranked
candidates will be interviewed in person or by telephone prior
to final selection. Students admitted with a bachelor's degree
must complete the master's program requirements (first two years),
prior to admission to the Ph.D. program. Students transferring
from other graduate programs may petition the department for
credit for equivalent courses.
Degree Requirements
Requirements for completing the clinical program are summarized
in Table 1. Students registered in the clinical program are
required to complete satisfactorily the following three depart-
mental core courses: Psychology 600, 601, 602. Two of these
courses must be completed in the first two years of the program.
. ?
In addition, students are required to complete satisfactorily
Psychology 744, 770, 820/821, 822/823, 824, 880 (practicum),
910, 911 and 898. Normally, students will complete these courses
in the first two years of the program. After successful completioi
of these courses, students may then be admitted to the Ph.D.
program and complete the remaining three years of the program
(see Table).

-2-
Students in residence in the third year and beyond are required
to maintain a clinical caseload and/or engage in other clinical
work (e.g., program evaluation), under the supervision of clinical
faculty. General supervision of students in the clinical program
is exercised by the Clinical Committee.

Supervisory Committee
. ?
Students must satisfy two research requirements: an MA thesis
and Ph.D. dissertation. For the MA thesis, students must establish
a Supervisory Committee before the end of their first semester in
the program. The MA Supervisory Committee will consist of at least
two faculty members from the Psychology Department, one of whom
will be the Senior Supervisor and Chairman of the Committee. Other
faculty outside the Department who are considered necessary by the
student and Senior Supervisor may serve on the Committee. The
Ph.D. Dissertation committee should be established by the end of
the first semester following admission to the Ph.D. program. Student
are required to choose a faculty member in the Psychology Depart-
ment as the Senior Supervisor and Chairperson of their Ph.D.
Supervisory Committee and two or more additional members. At least
two of the committee members must be members of the Psychology
Department, and at least one member of the Committee must be able
to act as advisor with respect to measurement and design aspects
of the thesis research.
Ph.D. Comprehensive Examination
The Clinical faculty will design a written and oral Ph.D.
Comprehensive Examination to be held in the Spring of each year.
This examination maybe taken after admission to the Ph.D. program
plus successful completion of at least three of the required third
year courses. (Note: The third course may be taken in the
semester in which the student intends to write the Ph.D. exam-
ination). The Comprehensive Examination may be retaken only once;
and it must bu successfully completed prior to registration in the
Ph.D. level Internship, Psyc 886, and before submission of the Ph.D.
Dissertation."
Rationale for these changes is attached.

Graduate Program
The American and Canadian Psychological Associations have accredited
our PhD Program in Clinical Psychology. This Program requires students to do
coursework and a thesis at the MA level, and further coursework, an internship,
and a dissertation at the PhD level. Because, the MA course requirements are
different for Experimental Psychology and Clinical Psychology students, their
programs are listed separately in the Calendar. Naturally, the Program for
Clinical Students is labelled the "Clinical MA Program." That creates a problem
for APA and CPA, however, since they accredited a Clinical PhD Program, not a
Clinical MA Program. In order that a clinical psychology student who terminates
at the MA level does not represent the degree as an accredited "Clinical MA,
4
we
have been asked by the accrediting agencies to change the degree label.
This request is easily accomodated; the proposed calendar entry simply
lists the MA level and PhD level requirements for clinical students under a
single heading: "Program In Clinical Psychology." No requirements are being
deleted and none is being added; only the labels and the way the Information is
packaged have changed.
While making this format change, we are taking the opportunity to
explicate two features of the Clinical Program that should be formally
recognized: senior students' caseload work, and the 6upervisory role of the
Department's Clinical Committee. These are described in the two sentences
immediately preceding Table 1 in the proposed entry.
