MEMORANDUM
DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES
TO: ?
Senate ?
FROM: B.P. Clayman
SUBJECT: DISSOLUTION OF THE
?
DATE: 18 November 1986
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, SENATE
GRADUATE STUDIES COMMITTEE
Action undertaken by the Senate Graduate Studies
Committee at its Meeting of October 20, 1986, gives rise to
the following motion:
MOTION:
"That Senate approve and recommend approval to the
Board of Governors, as set forth in
S.86-80 ,
the
dissolution of the Executive Committee, Senate Graduate
Studies Committee."
RATIONALE:
At present, the Executive Committee has three
responsibilities:
1.
Upon delegation from the Senate Graduate Studies
40 ?
proposals;
to recommend to Senate on new course
proposals;
It was decided that the proper body to handle this was
the SGSC which has representation from all departments.
2.
To recommend to the Senate Graduate Studies Committee
on all Calendar changes;
The extra "layer" of approval was deemed unnecessary; in
practice, meetings of the SGSC followed immediately those
of the ESGSC and covered the same ground. The SGSC alone
would consider all Calendar changes.
3.
To decide on admission or degree recommendations in
those cases where the Dean of Graduate Studies is not
able to approve.
It was decided that the proper body to handle this was
the SGSC which has representation from all departments.
Both the ESGSC and the SGSC considered this action and
were each unanimously in favour of eliminating the ESGSC.
