MEMORANDUM
Gerontology Diploma Program

The Gerontology Diploma Program would like to propose the following
calendar changes to the FACC:
1)
p. 87, under Admission Requirements: paragraph 1 --
Change the second sentence to read: Under exceptional circumstances,
students with a minimum of 60 credit hours of universitycoursework
or the equivalent (eq an RN) may be admitted provided the necessary
prerequisites tor Gerontology core courses have been successtul.Ly completed.
Rationale: The previous wording, that "mature students..." has proven
misleading and encourages too many people without at least two years
of university to apply to the program. The change of wording as proposed
does not alter our actual practice---eg. that, in particular with regard
to Registered Nurses who may not actually hold a university degree,
we make exceptions to the degree requirement.
2)
P. 87, underNotes: paragraph 2 --
Change this to read: Students are advised to take GERO 300 when they
begin the program.
Rationale: The deleted Phrase, "and to complete the required courses
before undertaking the optional courses" is rarely possible, given
the prerequisites for at least one of the required courses, GERO 400,
is another required course--GERO 300. As well, since GERO 400 is only
offered once a year--Spring Semester, and KIN. 461
iE
only offered
once a year--Fall Semester, it is frequently impractical for students,
particularly if they wish to complete the program by taking courses
full time, to follow this advice.
