Report on
Undergraduate Extension Credit Courses
May 1, 1985 -- April 30, 1986
Introduction
Undergraduate Extension Credit courses at Simon Fraser University are offered in a variety of
settings and serve the educational needs of a varied student body. These students can be pursuing
full and/or part-time study and can take their classes on campus in the evening, at several
alternative sites including Simon Fraser University Downtown, at home through distance
education courses, or through a combination of these means.
Specific programs of departments, Schools and Faculties included in this report are the On
Campus Evening Program (CE), Intersession (IS) and Summer Session (SS), SFU Downtown
(DT), Faculty of Education Interior Programs (ED), Distance Education courses (DISC), the

offered through these programs, with a total of 22,359 course enrollees and 2,426 FTE, 28% of
the total University FTE for 1985-86.
Course Offerings and Enrollment
Enrollments in Extension Credit courses in 1985-86 were down 3% from the previous year,
corresponding to the decrease in university-wide enrollments during the same period. As Chart 1
indicates, this is the first actual decrease in Extension Credit enrollments in ten years and hence
warrants some attention in this report.

Courses
While this chart illustrates the steady growth of Extension enrollments with the expansion of course
offerings, the correlation between enrollments and course offerings is actually much stronger than
this chart indicates, the rise in course offerings since 1983-84 being largely accounted for by the
addition of PEP which offers a relatively larger number of courses to a small and stable group of
students. Charts 2 and 3 offer a clearer picture of the direct link between the number of courses
offered and enrollments in the Campus Evening and the Downtown Programs.

While some Extension Credit programs remain stable in terms of course offerings and hence
enrollments (PEP, ED, SR), and while others are able to increase both (DISC), the decrease in
courses offered in the Campus Evening program has had an impact on overall Extension Credit
enrollment.
Enrollment. Course and FTE Distribution. 1985-86
Chart 4 below shows course and enrollment data for the three administrative divisions of
Extension Credit programs -- On Campus (CE, IS,SS), Off Campus (DT, ED, SR, PEP), and
Distance Education (DISC) -- and compares that data to 1984-85:

Numbers in parentheses indicate decrease
As indicated above, the On Campus Extension Credit Program is the only one which experienced a
decline in 1985-86, both in courses offered and in enrollments. The CE/IS/SS program makes up
60% of total Extension enrollment and 61% of the total annualized FTE.
The Campus Evening, Downtown and Distance Education Programs each experienced a
decline in enroilments/FFE in the 86-1 semester without any corresponding decrease in course
offerings.
Distance Education Courses (DISC)
Fifty-seven undergraduate courses were available via distance education during 1985-86, an
addition of five courses compared to last year. The total number of offerings of these courses was
122, nine more than in
1984-85.
The total number of course enrollees was
5,268*,
an increase of
6% relative to 1984-85. As is shown in Chart 5, the Distance Education Program has grown
steadily since 1976, with enrollment keeping steady pace with the gradual development of DIS
courses.
* Includes OUCBC students taking courses through Simon Fraser University.

Report on Credit-Free A ctivities
May 1, 1985 - April 30, 1986
This report presents the range of credit-free lectures, conferences, symposia, seminars,
media productions, professional development courses and other programs reported by Faculties,
Schools and departments of the University. As well, this report includes data on credit-free
activities offered to faculty, students and staff by administrative units on campus. In all cases, the
- focus for credit-free activities at Simon Fraser University is on organizing educational
opportunities for adults whose career, professional or personal intellectual interests cannot be
served by the regular credit program.
During the 1985/86 reporting period enrolments in the 363 credit-free activities listed
totalled 18,055.
Several well-established and continuing credit-free programs, each consisting of 5 to 6
courses, are now offered annually through the downtown School for Liberal and Professional
Studies. These include the Foundation Program in Tourism Management, The New Enterprise
Program, Arts Management and Administration, the Foundation Program in Management for
Women, and Management for Non-profit and Voluntary Sector Organizations. New programs
offered for the first time in 1985/86 are the Foundation program in Occupational Health and Safety
by the School of Kinesiology, and Managing the Architectural Firm by the Faculty of Business
Administration. In addition to these structured programs, a selection of established and new
courses is provided semesterly, forming programs in several topical areas including the Human
Performance Program and the Writing Program.
The Writing Program, involving the Departments of English and Communication, the
Faculty of Education and the Canadian Studies Program, has grown in the past three years to
approximately
25
to 30 courses per year. In 1985/86 the expertise associated with this program
was used by the School of Engineering Science to design a credit communications course for
engineering students. Faculty involved with the Writing Program have completed the first year of
planning for a Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing, working closely with the national
publishing community and the federal Department of Communication.
0

University conferences, bringing together academics, professionals and interested members
of the community, provide national and international recognition for the University. A number of
departments organized conferences during 1985/86. Among these were the Centre for the Arts,
"International Computer Music Conference
1985";
School of Criminology/The Northern
Conference, "Northern Youth in Crisis: A Challenge for Justice"; Institute for the Humanities,
"National Symposium on Environmental Ethics: Roles and Responsibilities in Environmental
Conservation"; Latin American Studies, "International Conference on Liberation Theology"; and
Natural Resources Management, "Coastal Engineering and Coastal Processes on the Canadian
West Coast and the Beaufort Sea".
